Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Ihbitā (اهْبِطَا): "Descend" or "go down" — a command from Allah to Adam and Hawwa (Eve) to leave the Garden and go to the earth.
- Jamīʿan (جَمِيعًا): "All together" — meaning Adam, Hawwa, and Iblis (Satan) would all descend at once.
- ʿAdūw (عَدُوّ): "Enemy" — signifying the mutual hostility between humankind and Satan.
- Hudan (هُدًى): "Guidance" — referring to the revelation, messengers, and clear signs that Allah sends to humanity.
- Yadill (يَضِل): "Go astray" — to lose the path of truth in this worldly life.
- Yashqā (يَشْقَى): "Be miserable" or "suffer" — referring to distress and punishment in the Hereafter.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
After Adam and Hawwa had eaten from the forbidden tree and experienced the consequences of their disobedience, Allah addressed them with a decree that would set the stage for all of human existence. He commanded them: "Descend from the Garden, all of you together" — Adam, Hawwa, and Iblis, who had caused their fall. This descent was not merely a punishment; it was the beginning of a divine test, a journey of return, and a manifestation of Allah's mercy and wisdom.
Allah then declared a fundamental reality: "Some of you are enemies to others." This enmity is not between Adam and Hawwa, but between the children of Adam and Iblis and his progeny. Satan's enmity is sworn and relentless — he vowed to mislead humanity from every direction, and this hostility will persist until the Day of Judgment. This is a warning to every human being: beware of the enemy who whispers, deceives, and beautifies sin, for he is ever-present and ever-watchful.
Yet, in the very same breath, Allah delivered the most comforting and hopeful news. He said: "If there comes to you from Me guidance, then whoever follows My guidance will not go astray, nor will he be miserable." This is a divine promise — a covenant of mercy. The guidance referred to here is the revelation sent through the prophets, the scriptures, and ultimately the final message of Islam. It is the light that illuminates the darkness of ignorance, the compass that directs the lost, and the rope that pulls humanity from the depths of despair.
Whoever follows this guidance — by believing in it, acting upon it, and making it the foundation of their life — receives two magnificent guarantees:
First, "he will not go astray" in this world. He will not be confused by the conflicting ideologies, the seductive temptations, or the fleeting pleasures that mislead so many. His heart will be anchored in certainty, his mind illuminated by knowledge, and his path clear before him. He will know his purpose, his Lord, and his destination.
Second, "he will not be miserable" in the Hereafter. He will not suffer the anguish of the Fire, the regret of wasted opportunities, or the torment of separation from Allah's mercy. Instead, he will enter Paradise — a place of eternal bliss, where no fear or grief can reach him.
This verse is a profound invitation to every soul. It tells us that our descent to this earth was not a curse, but a test — and the key to passing that test is in our hands. Allah has not left us alone in this world; He has sent us guidance through His messengers and books. The final and complete guidance is the Qur'an, and the perfect example is the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
So, dear reader, reflect on this promise. The path to success in both worlds is simple yet profound: follow the guidance of Allah. Do not let Satan's whispers deceive you, do not let the distractions of this world blind you, and do not let despair overcome you. Allah's mercy is vast, His guidance is accessible, and His promise is true. Take hold of this guidance today, and you will never be lost, and you will never be miserable — in this life or the next.
