- نَخْزَى (nakhzā): We would be put to shame or suffer disgrace.
Explanation of the Verse:
If We had destroyed these disbelievers with a punishment before sending them a Messenger — before revealing a Book and establishing the proof against them — they would have had an excuse on the Day of Judgment. They would have said: "Our Lord, why did You not send us a Messenger? If only You had sent us one, we would have followed Your signs and obeyed Your commands before we were humiliated and disgraced by Your punishment."
This verse highlights the profound wisdom of Allah in sending messengers before punishing any nation. Allah, in His infinite mercy and justice, never punishes a people without first establishing clear proof against them. He sends prophets with guidance, scriptures, and miracles so that no one can claim ignorance on the Day of Judgment.
The disbelievers of Makkah, who rejected Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), are being reminded that they have no excuse. A Messenger has come to them, the Qur'an has been revealed to them, and the proof has been established. If they persist in disbelief, their punishment is entirely just.
Yet, even in this stern reminder, there is a beautiful invitation to faith. Allah is telling us: "The door of guidance is open. The Messenger has come. The Book is in your hands. Do not wait until it is too late — until you face humiliation in this world and disgrace in the Hereafter. Respond now, while you still have the chance."
This verse also teaches us a profound lesson about gratitude. When we have access to guidance — through the Qur'an, through knowledge, through righteous company — we must seize it. We should not be among those who only realize the value of guidance when it is too late, when death approaches, or when the punishment arrives.
Dear reader, Allah has sent His Messenger to you and revealed His Book for you. The proof is established, and the path is clear. Do not delay your return to Allah. Do not let pride or procrastination rob you of the greatest treasure — faith and closeness to your Creator. Embrace the guidance now, before the day comes when you will wish you had, and no wish will be granted.
