Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • قَالَ (He said): Pharaoh spoke, addressing the two prophets.
  • رَبُّكُمَا (your Lord): The Lord of both Musa and Harun, meaning the One who created, sustains, and governs them.
  • يَا مُوسَى (O Musa): A direct call, singling out Musa by name.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Musa and Harun stood before Pharaoh and delivered the message of monotheism—calling him to worship Allah alone and to free the Children of Israel—Pharaoh responded with arrogant denial and mockery. He asked: "Who is this Lord of yours, O Musa?" His question was not a sincere inquiry seeking truth, but rather a challenge laced with contempt, as he refused to acknowledge any power above his own. He addressed both of them initially, but then singled out Musa by name, because Musa was the primary messenger and Harun his supporter and follower. Pharaoh's question was an attempt to belittle their message and to trap them in a public debate, hoping to undermine their credibility before the people.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us the importance of patience and composure when faced with hostility or ridicule. Musa and Harun did not waver or become intimidated by Pharaoh's arrogance; instead, they stood firm, ready to answer with clarity and wisdom. As believers, we are reminded that the truth needs no fear of opposition—no matter how powerful or defiant the opponent may seem. When we call people to Allah, we should expect challenges, but we must respond with confidence, knowledge, and gentleness, trusting that Allah is with those who strive in His cause. Pharaoh's question, though posed in mockery, became the very door through which Musa delivered one of the most profound declarations of faith—a reminder that even the most hostile questions can be opportunities to proclaim the greatness of our Lord. Let us learn from this noble example: be steadfast, be wise, and never let the arrogance of others silence the truth in your heart.
