Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَضَلَّ (Adalla): Led astray, caused to deviate from the path of truth and guidance.
- قَوْمَهُ (Qawmahu): His people — the Egyptians, specifically the chiefs and followers who obeyed him.
- وَمَا هَدَىٰ (Wa mā hadā): And he did not guide them — he neither showed them the right path nor led them to it.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah informs us of the ultimate outcome of Pharaoh's leadership. Pharaoh did not merely fail to guide his people — he actively led them into misguidance. He beautified disbelief and denial of the truth for them, making falsehood appear attractive and alluring. He deceived them with his cunning words and empty promises, presenting his tyranny as wisdom and his corruption as righteousness.
The verse then emphatically confirms: "And he did not guide them." This is a decisive refutation of Pharaoh's own claim, when he said to his people: *"I only guide you to the path of right conduct"* (Surah Ghafir: 29). Allah exposes this lie — Pharaoh was not a guide to truth; he was a misleader into darkness. From the very beginning of his mission against Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) until his final moments drowning in the sea, Pharaoh's sole legacy was misguidance.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for all who hold positions of leadership, influence, or authority. A leader is responsible not only for their own actions but for those they lead. Pharaoh's crime was twofold: he himself rejected the truth, and he dragged an entire nation down with him. His people trusted him, followed him, and ultimately perished because of him — and on the Day of Judgment, he will carry the burden of their misguidance along with his own.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to reflect on the company you keep and the leaders you follow. Every person who influences you — whether a political figure, a scholar, a social media personality, or a friend — either draws you closer to Allah or pushes you away from Him. Choose your guides carefully. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: *"A person follows the religion of their close friend, so let each of you look carefully at whom they take as a friend."* (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 4833)
Moreover, this verse is a reminder of Allah's perfect justice. Pharaoh had every opportunity to believe — the miracles of Musa were clear, the signs were undeniable, yet he chose arrogance and misguidance. And when death came to him, his faith was rejected because it came at the moment of despair. Do not delay your return to Allah. The door of repentance is open now, but no one knows when it will close forever.
Finally, take comfort in knowing that truth always prevails. Pharaoh's misguidance was temporary; Allah's guidance is eternal. Align yourself with the people of truth, and you will never be lost — no matter how dark the world around you becomes.
