Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the polytheists of Makkah with a powerful rhetorical question that exposes the absurdity of their worship. Allah says: "Have they taken gods from the earth who can raise the dead?" The meaning is: *Rather*, these people have adopted deities made from the earth — stones, wood, and idols carved by their own hands — and then they claim these are gods worthy of worship. Yet, these very idols are lifeless, powerless, and utterly incapable of even the simplest act of creation, let alone the greatest miracle of all: bringing the dead back to life.
The verse is a direct challenge and a rebuke. The use of the word "yunshirūn" (they raise the dead) is deliberate — it highlights the ultimate test of divinity. A true god must possess the power over life and death, the ability to create and resurrect. But these idols, which are themselves created from the earth, cannot even move, hear, see, or help themselves. How then can they be worshipped as gods?
The Qur'an is inviting the reader to reflect: If your "god" cannot even protect itself from decay, dust, or damage, how can it protect you? If it cannot give life, how can it grant you anything at all? The logic is clear and undeniable — true divinity belongs only to the One who created the heavens and the earth, who gives life and causes death, and who will resurrect all of humanity on the Day of Judgment.
This verse is a call to awaken the intellect. It urges us to look beyond blind tradition and inherited practices, and to ask ourselves: What truly deserves our worship? The answer is clear — only Allah, the Living, the Self-Sustaining, the One who holds the keys of life and death, is worthy of our devotion. Let this verse be a reminder for us to purify our hearts from any form of false devotion and to turn wholeheartedly to the One who truly deserves our love, fear, and hope.
