Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "يَغُوصُونَ" (they dive): Descending into the depths of the sea to extract pearls, jewels, and precious treasures.
- "دُونَ ذَلِكَ" (besides that): Other tasks and works beyond diving, such as construction and craftsmanship.
- "حَافِظِينَ" (guardians/keepers): Allah protecting and overseeing them so they could not disobey or corrupt their assigned work.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Among the countless blessings Allah bestowed upon His Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him) was the subjugation of the jinn and devils to serve him. Allah says: *"And of the devils were those who dived for him and did work besides that, and We were of them guardians."*
Allah, in His infinite power and wisdom, placed a group of the rebellious devils under Sulayman's command. They would plunge into the depths of the seas and oceans, retrieving for him pearls, corals, and precious gems that no human diver could ever reach. Beyond this remarkable feat, they also performed other laborious tasks—constructing magnificent buildings, crafting intricate artifacts, and executing whatever Sulayman commanded of them. They had no power to refuse or escape his orders, for Allah Himself was their Guardian, keeping them bound to their duties and preventing them from causing corruption or harm.
This verse reveals a profound truth: the Almighty, who created the heavens and the earth, also has absolute authority over every created being—including the most rebellious of His creatures. When He wills something, no force in existence can oppose it. The very devils, who are sworn enemies of humanity, became obedient servants to a righteous prophet by Allah's command. This demonstrates that true power and sovereignty belong solely to Allah, and that He grants authority to whom He wills among His righteous servants.
Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, reflect upon this magnificent scene: the mighty ocean depths, with their hidden treasures, were made accessible to a servant of Allah. The rebellious jinn, who normally spread mischief and corruption, were compelled to serve a prophet of righteousness. This is the honor Allah bestows upon His sincere servants—He places even the most formidable forces of creation under their command.
If Allah could subjugate the devils for Sulayman, how much more capable is He of easing your affairs, removing your obstacles, and granting you victory over your challenges? Trust in Allah's power, remain steadfast in your obedience to Him, and know that nothing in this universe—neither the depths of the sea nor the schemes of the devils—can stand against His will. When you align yourself with Allah's command, He aligns the entire creation to serve your success in this life and the next.
