Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Wa'd al-Haqq (الْوَعْدُ الْحَقُّ): The true promise — referring to the Day of Resurrection and Judgment.
  • Shākhiṣah (شَاخِصَةٌ): Staring with wide-open, fixed eyes; eyelids raised and unable to blink due to overwhelming terror.
  • Yā Waylanā (يَا وَيْلَنَا): An expression of utter distress and self-condemnation, meaning "Woe to us!" or "Calamity upon us!"
  • Ghaflah (غَفْلَةٍ): Heedlessness, negligence, or being absorbed in worldly distractions.
  • Ẓālimīn (ظَالِمِينَ): Wrongdoers — those who committed injustice, primarily by disbelieving and disobeying their Creator.

The Interpretation:

When the moment arrives and the true promise of Allah draws near — and its first signs begin to unfold with the opening of the barrier of Ya'juj and Ma'juj, who surge forth from every height — the horrors of the Day of Judgment become visible and undeniable. At that instant, the eyes of those who rejected faith become fixed and wide-open, their eyelids frozen, unable to blink, as terror seizes their hearts and minds. The reality they once denied now confronts them with absolute clarity.

In that state of sheer panic and regret, they cry out from the depths of their souls: "Woe to us! We were heedless of this day. We lived our lives absorbed in amusement, chasing fleeting pleasures, and never paused to prepare for what we now witness with our own eyes." Then, in a moment of painful self-awareness, they add: "Nay — we were not merely forgetful; we were wrongdoers. We deliberately placed our worship in the wrong place, directing it to false gods and idols instead of the One True Lord. We knew the truth, yet we turned away from it."

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: the promise of Allah is certain and near, even if we perceive it as distant. The heedlessness of this world is a veil that blinds the heart — but on that Day, the veil will be torn away, and nothing will remain except the stark reality of our deeds. Let this be a wake-up call: the time to turn back to Allah, to seek His forgiveness, and to live with purpose and awareness is now — before the eyes become fixed in terror and the cry of regret becomes our only companion. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has opened the door of repentance wide for us in this life. Let us not wait until that Day when the door closes forever and the only words left are: "Woe to us… we were wrongdoers."

And there is prohibition upon [the people of] a city which We have destroyed that they will [ever] return
96حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فُتِحَتْ يَأْجُوجُ وَمَأْجُوجُ وَهُم مِّن كُلِّ حَدَبٍ يَنسِلُونَ
Until when [the dam of] Gog and Magog has been opened and they, from every elevation, descend
And [when] the true promise has approached; then suddenly the eyes of those who disbelieved will be staring [in horror, while they say], "O woe to us; we had been unmindful of this; rather, we were wrongdoers."
98إِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ حَصَبُ جَهَنَّمَ أَنتُمْ لَهَا وَارِدُونَ
Indeed, you [disbelievers] and what you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to [enter] it.
99لَوْ كَانَ هَٰؤُلَاءِ آلِهَةً مَّا وَرَدُوهَا ۖ وَكُلٌّ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ
Had these [false deities] been [actual] gods, they would not have come to it, but all are eternal therein.
