Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Maqami' (مَقَامِعُ): Iron maces, clubs, or heavy whips used for striking. The singular is *miqma'ah*, referring to an instrument of punishment.
  • Min Hadid (مِنْ حَدِيدٍ): Made of iron — indicating the severity and weight of the instrument.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah describes the punishment prepared for the disbelievers who rejected His signs and opposed His messengers. After mentioning that they will be clothed in garments of fire and scalded by boiling water poured over their heads, Allah now reveals another aspect of their torment: "And for them are iron maces."

These are heavy clubs and whips made of iron, with which the angels appointed over Hell will strike the disbelievers on their heads and bodies. The use of iron — the hardest of metals — signifies the crushing, unbearable force of this punishment. Every time the disbelievers try to escape the Fire out of extreme distress and anguish, they will be driven back with these iron maces, and they will be told: "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire."

This verse paints a vivid picture of utter humiliation and helplessness. The disbelievers, who in this world were arrogant and refused to bow to their Creator, will now be struck down by the angels — powerless, broken, and without any defender. The iron maces are not merely a physical punishment; they are a symbol of the complete subjugation of those who once defied Allah's authority.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How merciful is Allah in this life! He gives us chance after chance, sending prophets, scriptures, and countless signs — all so that we may turn to Him and be saved from such a fate. The punishment described here is not meant to frighten us into despair, but to awaken our hearts. If we truly understood the reality of Hell, we would race toward repentance and good deeds. The door of forgiveness is open right now — before the moment comes when iron maces will be our only reality. Let every breath be an opportunity to return to Allah, for His mercy is greater than His wrath, and His Paradise is far more beautiful than any punishment we could ever fear.

📜 Verse 19-23 — Al-Hajj

These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord. But those who disbelieved will have cut out for them garments of fire. Poured upon their heads will be scalding water
By which is melted that within their bellies and [their] skins.
And for [striking] them are maces of iron.
Every time they want to get out of Hellfire from anguish, they will be returned to it, and [it will be said], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!"
Indeed, Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments therein will be silk.
