Word Meanings:

  • مِنْ غَمٍّ (min ghamm): From distress, anguish, or overwhelming grief and suffocation.
  • أُعِيدُوا فِيهَا (u'eedoo feeha): They are returned back into it (the Fire).
  • عَذَابَ الْحَرِيقِ ('adhab al-hareeq): The torment of burning fire that reaches the utmost degree of scorching and incineration.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a vivid and terrifying picture of the punishment awaiting those who reject the truth and persist in disbelief. When the dwellers of Hell find themselves engulfed in unbearable agony—suffocating from the smoke, the heat, and the crushing weight of their despair—they will desperately attempt to escape. Yet, every single time they try to climb out of that abyss, driven by the sheer intensity of their torment, they will be violently thrust back into the very heart of the Fire.

The angels of punishment will seize them and cast them back, saying: "Taste the torment of the burning Fire!" This is not merely a physical punishment; it is a psychological torture of the highest order—the crushing realization that there is no way out, no relief, and no end. Their hope for even a moment's respite is shattered repeatedly, and each return deepens their agony. The word "burning" here emphasizes that the fire is not ordinary; it penetrates the skin, consumes the flesh, and reaches the very core of their being, leaving no part of them untouched.

This scene is a stark warning to humanity: the choices we make in this fleeting world determine our eternal destiny. The Qur'an presents this reality not to frighten us into despair, but to awaken our hearts. It is a call to reflect on the mercy of Allah, who has given us countless opportunities to turn back to Him, to seek His forgiveness, and to live a life of righteousness. The very fact that we are reading these words today is a sign of His grace—He has not yet sealed our fate, and the door of repentance remains wide open.

A Da'wah Reflection:

O beloved reader, imagine the contrast: the same tongue that could have uttered words of remembrance, gratitude, and repentance will, in that moment, be told to taste the fire. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has not left us without a way out. He has sent the Qur'an as a guide, the Prophet ﷺ as a mercy, and the path of Islam as a straight road to eternal bliss. Every prayer, every act of kindness, every moment of patience brings us closer to gardens beneath which rivers flow, where there is no grief, no pain, and no end.

Do not let this verse be a mere recitation on your lips—let it be a catalyst for change. Turn to Allah now, before the day comes when turning back is impossible. Seek His forgiveness, embrace His guidance, and taste the sweetness of faith in this life, so that you may be saved from the burning Fire in the next. Allah's mercy is vast, and His door is open until the very last breath. Seize this moment, for it may never come again.

📜 Verse 20-24 — Al-Hajj

By which is melted that within their bellies and [their] skins.
And for [striking] them are maces of iron.
Every time they want to get out of Hellfire from anguish, they will be returned to it, and [it will be said], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!"
Indeed, Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments therein will be silk.
And they had been guided [in worldly life] to good speech, and they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.
