Surah Al-Hajj — Verse 61

Word Meanings:

• يُولِجُ (yūlij): He causes to enter or penetrate; He makes one thing pass into another.
• اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ (al-layla fī al-nahār): The night into the day — meaning the darkness of night gradually replaces the light of day.
• سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ (Samī‘un Baṣīr): All-Hearing, All-Seeing — He hears every sound and sees every action, nothing escapes His knowledge.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse comes as a powerful conclusion to the previous rulings about justice, defense, and the support Allah grants to the oppressed. The phrase "That is because" refers back to the victory and divine aid promised to those who are wronged and seek justice. Allah is telling us: the reason you can be certain of My help is that I am the Almighty who has absolute power over all things — and the proof of that power is right before your eyes, every single day.

Consider the magnificent sign: Allah causes the night to enter into the day, and the day to enter into the night. As the sun sets, darkness gradually creeps in and overtakes the light; as the sun rises, light pierces through the darkness and overcomes it. This continuous, precise alternation — day after day, season after season — is a living testimony to Allah’s perfect control over the universe. He lengthens one and shortens the other, and this cycle never fails, never falters. If He can manage this grand cosmic balance with such precision, then surely He is capable of granting victory to His righteous servants and bringing justice to the oppressed.

And then Allah adds: "And indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing." This is a direct comfort to the believer. He hears every supplication, every cry of distress, every whispered prayer in the depths of the night. He sees every act of oppression, every injustice committed in secret or in public. Nothing is hidden from Him — not the tear that falls silently, not the sigh of the weary heart, not the plot of the wrongdoer. And because He hears and sees, He will respond and recompense accordingly.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. The same Allah who orchestrates the rising and setting of the sun, who controls the ebb and flow of light and darkness — this is the One who hears your prayers and sees your struggles. If you are facing hardship or injustice, know that your Lord is not unaware. He is the All-Hearing who listens to your voice, and the All-Seeing who witnesses your situation. Place your trust in Him, for the One who governs the heavens and the earth is certainly capable of transforming your darkness into light, just as He transforms the night into day. Let this verse fill your heart with hope and certainty — for with Allah, no prayer is lost, no effort is wasted, and no wrongdoer escapes His sight.
