Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shiqwatuna (شقوتنا): Our misery, wretchedness, or misfortune — referring to the state of being deprived of divine guidance due to one's own choices and the consequences of sin.
- Daalleen (ضالين): Those who have gone astray from the path of truth and righteousness.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Resurrection, when the disbelievers are confronted with the reality of their rejection of the messengers and the truth they brought, they will cry out in remorse and regret: "Our Lord, our misery and wretchedness overcame us — the desires, pleasures, and whims that we pursued in life dominated us, and we were a people who had gone astray from the path of guidance."
This confession is not an excuse that will save them, but rather an acknowledgment of their own failure. They admit that the misfortune that befell them was a result of their own choices — they allowed their base desires and worldly pleasures to overpower their intellect and conscience. They recognize that they were a people who strayed from the truth, even when it was presented to them clearly by the messengers.
The verse carries a profound lesson: the "misery" that overcomes a person is not something imposed by fate without cause, but rather the natural consequence of turning away from divine guidance. When a person repeatedly chooses sin over obedience, and follows their whims instead of revelation, their heart becomes sealed, and they find themselves trapped in a cycle of misguidance — until it is too late.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a mirror for every soul. It reminds us that the greatest tragedy is not failure in worldly matters, but the loss of guidance. The people described here had every opportunity to believe, yet they allowed their desires to conquer them. Today, Allah has given you the gift of life, the gift of faith, and the gift of choice. Do not let your desires overcome you as they overcame them. Turn to your Lord now, while the door of repentance is still open, and seek His guidance before the Day when regret will be of no avail. The Qur'an is your guide, and the Prophet ﷺ is your example — hold fast to them, and you will never be among the losers.
