Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah addresses those who rejected the truth, reminding them of a painful reality: His verses — the clear signs and revelations of the Qur’an — were being recited to them time and again, in their very midst. They heard the words of their Lord, calling them to guidance, mercy, and eternal success. Yet, instead of leaning in with humility and faith, they recoiled. They turned their backs, retreating like one who steps backward on his heels, fleeing from the very message that could have saved them.
This was not a passive ignorance; it was an active aversion. When the Qur’an was recited, they found it burdensome and distasteful. They twisted away in arrogance, refusing to listen, refusing to reflect, and refusing to submit. Their retreat was both physical and spiritual — they distanced themselves from the truth, preferring the comfort of their old ways over the light of revelation. They did not merely reject the message; they fled from it, as if the words of Allah were a fire they could not bear to approach.
Yet, the verse carries a profound lesson for us today. The Qur’an is not a book to be avoided; it is a mercy to be embraced. Every recitation is an invitation — a call to pause, to reflect, and to draw nearer to our Creator. Those who turn away in this life will one day face the consequences of their flight, but those who respond with open hearts will find peace beyond measure. Let us not be among those who recoil from the truth when it is presented to us. Instead, let us be among those who lean forward, eager to hear, eager to learn, and eager to obey — for in that direction lies true success, both in this world and the next.
