Word Meanings:

  • Azwājihim (أَزْوَاجِهِمْ): Their wives — the women to whom they are lawfully married.
  • Mā malakat aymānuhum (مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ): Those whom their right hands possess — i.e., female captives of war (slave women) who became lawful for them through the rules of Islamic law.
  • Ghayru malūmīn (غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ): Not to be blamed — free from any blame or sin.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah, the Most High, described the believers as those who guard their chastity and restrain their desires from everything unlawful, He now clarifies the lawful exceptions to this rule. He says that the believers are not blamed for their intimate relations with two categories of women:

First, their lawful wives — women whom they have married through a valid Islamic marriage contract. The bond of marriage makes physical intimacy between husband and wife a pure and blessed act, one that is rewarded by Allah when done with the right intention.

Second, those whom their right hands possess — meaning female captives of war who came into their ownership through legitimate means. Islam permitted this in the early period of revelation as a practical solution to the social realities of warfare, while simultaneously encouraging the freeing of such women and their honorable treatment. This permission applies specifically to men, as the verse addresses them; women do not have the same ruling regarding male slaves, as the protection of a woman's chastity is established through other clear evidences in the Qur'an and Sunnah.

For these two categories, there is no blame, no sin, and no reproach upon the believers. Their desires are not suppressed in a way that leads to corruption, nor are they left unrestricted in a way that leads to immorality. Rather, Islam strikes a perfect balance — it channels human nature into pure, lawful avenues, protecting society from the harms of illicit relationships while honoring the natural instincts that Allah placed within His creation.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate the beauty of this divine legislation. The Creator, who knows exactly what He has created, did not leave human beings confused about their most intimate affairs. He provided clear guidance that protects dignity, preserves lineage, and builds strong families. The believer is not a being without desires, but one who has learned to direct those desires toward what pleases Allah and benefits society.

This verse is a reminder that Islam is not a religion of harsh suppression, but of wise guidance. It does not ask you to destroy your nature, but to purify it. When you restrain yourself from the unlawful and content yourself with the lawful, you are not losing anything — you are gaining the pleasure of Allah, peace of heart, and a society free from the corruption that spreads when boundaries are crossed.

So let every believer take pride in this beautiful balance: guarding one's chastity is not a burden, but a badge of honor. And the reward with Allah for those who restrain themselves and remain pure is far greater than any fleeting pleasure that comes through disobedience. May Allah make us among those who guard their trusts and their promises, and who protect their chastity in the manner He has commanded.
