Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kharj (خَرْجًا): A payment, fee, or recompense asked in return for a service.
- Kharāj (خَرَاجُ): The reward, provision, or recompense that comes from Allah.
- Khayr al-Rāziqīn (خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ): The Best of all providers — the One whose giving surpasses that of every other giver.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses a false assumption that some disbelievers might hold — or that the Prophet ﷺ might be accused of — namely, that he was asking them for a payment or a material reward in return for delivering the message of Islam. Allah refutes this by saying: "Or do you ask them for a payment?" — meaning, O Messenger, have you demanded any worldly compensation from them for the guidance you bring? The answer is an emphatic no. You have never asked them for anything.
Then Allah reassures His Prophet ﷺ and all believers: "But the reward of your Lord is better." That is, whatever Allah has stored for you — of eternal bliss, divine pleasure, and boundless provision — far surpasses anything that any human being could ever give you. The wealth of this world, no matter how great, is fleeting and limited, while the reward from Allah is everlasting and immeasurable.
The verse concludes with a profound declaration: "And He is the Best of providers." Allah alone is the ultimate giver. Every provision that exists — whether material sustenance, spiritual guidance, or the rewards of the Hereafter — flows from His infinite generosity. No one can give like Him, and no one can withhold what He grants.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder this beautiful truth: the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spent his entire life calling people to the path of Allah, enduring hardship, ridicule, and persecution — yet he never asked anyone for a single penny in return. His only motivation was the pleasure of Allah and the salvation of humanity. This selflessness is the hallmark of true prophethood and sincere faith.
So, when you encounter the message of Islam, know that it comes to you free of charge — a priceless gift from the Creator to His creation. The One who invites you to Him does not need your wealth; rather, He wants to enrich your soul and elevate your station. Turn to Him with an open heart, and you will find that His provision — both in this life and the next — is far greater than anything this world can offer. Indeed, He is the Best of providers, and His generosity knows no bounds.
