Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tanhitoon (تَنْحِتُونَ): You carve, cut, or hew out.
  • Al-Jibal (الْجِبَالِ): The mountains.
  • Buyutan (بُيُوتًا): Houses or dwellings.
  • Fariheen (فَارِهِينَ): Skilled and adept at doing so; also carries the meaning of being arrogant, boastful, and exultant in their worldly abilities.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) reminds the people of Thamud of yet another of His countless blessings, while simultaneously reproaching them for their arrogance and heedlessness. They were given strength, skill, and intelligence, which they used to carve magnificent homes directly into the mountains—secure, sturdy dwellings that showcased their remarkable craftsmanship. The word *fariheen* captures two intertwined realities: they were indeed highly skilled and masterful in their work, but this very skill bred in them a sense of pride, vanity, and self-sufficiency. They became so engrossed in their worldly achievements and comforts that they forgot the One who granted them these abilities in the first place.

The Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) had warned them, saying, "Will you be left secure in what you have here?" (26:146), and this verse continues that admonition. Their carved mountain homes, their gardens, springs, and fruitful palms—all of it was a test from Allah. Yet instead of responding with gratitude and humility, they responded with arrogance and denial of the truth. They thought their power and skill would protect them forever, but no fortress carved in stone can shield a soul from the decree of Allah when His punishment arrives.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. These people were given talents that would astonish us even today—carving entire homes out of solid rock with the tools of their time. Yet all that brilliance was rendered worthless when they rejected the message of their Lord. How often do we, too, become proud of our skills, our wealth, our achievements, and forget that every breath we take is a gift from Allah? Our degrees, our careers, our homes, our technology—all of it is a trust from Him. The very hands that build and create are created by Him. The intelligence that solves problems is a spark from His infinite wisdom.

Do not let your blessings become a veil between you and your Creator. Use your talents to serve humanity, to spread goodness, and to draw closer to Allah. For the One who gave you the ability to carve mountains can also crumble them in an instant. The secure homes of Thamud did not save them from the mighty blast that overtook them when they persisted in their arrogance. Let their story be a lesson: true security lies not in what we build with our hands, but in our connection to the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Turn to Him in gratitude, and He will grant you a home far more lasting—a home in the gardens of eternal bliss, where no mountain can be carved, but where rivers flow beneath palaces of pure delight, forever and ever.
