Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tamassūhā (تَمَسُّوهَا): To touch or harm her in any way.
  • Bi sū’ (بِسُوءٍ): With any harm, evil, or mistreatment — such as striking, wounding, or killing.
  • Fa ya’khudhakum (فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ): So that it seizes you or overtakes you.
  • ‘Adhābu yawmin ‘aẓīm (عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ): The punishment of a tremendous day — a day of immense horror and severity.

Explanation of the Verse:

Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) warned his people after Allah had brought forth the she-camel from the rock as a sign of His power and truth. He said to them: "Do not touch this she-camel with any harm — do not strike her, wound her, or kill her. If you do, the punishment of a mighty day will seize you."

This was not merely a warning about an animal; it was a test of their obedience to Allah’s command and their respect for His signs. The she-camel had a designated share of water on certain days, and the people had theirs on other days — a clear arrangement that required patience, discipline, and submission to divine decree. Any transgression against her would be a direct transgression against Allah’s authority, and the consequence would be catastrophic: a punishment so severe that the day itself is described as "great" because of the terror and destruction it would bring.

The warning was clear, direct, and merciful — giving them every opportunity to turn back and obey before it was too late. Yet, as the story unfolds, they chose arrogance and defiance, and the promised punishment descended upon them.

A Da’wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer and every seeker of truth. Allah sets boundaries not to restrict us, but to protect us and to test our sincerity. When He commands us to avoid certain actions — whether harming others, violating His rights, or crossing His limits — it is always for our own good. The she-camel was a sign of Allah’s mercy and power; harming her was an act of ingratitude and rebellion.

How often do we, too, receive clear warnings from Allah through His Book and His Messenger? How often do we ignore them, thinking we know better? The punishment of that "great day" is not limited to the hereafter — it can also manifest in this life as loss, hardship, and spiritual ruin. But the door of repentance remains open until the moment the punishment arrives.

Let this verse inspire you to revere Allah’s signs, to respect His commands, and to never take His mercy for granted. The One who sent the she-camel as a test can send anything as a trial — and the One who warned of punishment is the Most Merciful, who loves for you to succeed. Embrace His guidance, and you will find peace in this life and safety on that tremendous Day.

📜 Verse 154-158 — Ash-Shu'ara

You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."
He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.
And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day."
But they hamstrung her and so became regretful.
And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
