Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿAqarūhā (فَعَقَرُوهَا): They hamstrung her or slaughtered her by cutting her tendons at the knee, causing her to fall and die. It refers to the act of killing the she-camel.
- Nādimīn (نَادِمِينَ): Those filled with deep regret, remorse, and sorrow over a deed they have committed.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the people of Thamūd rejected their prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) and demanded a miracle, Allah sent them a magnificent she-camel as a sign of His power and a test for them. Despite the warnings, they refused to believe and instead conspired to kill her. The verse tells us that they proceeded to hamstring and slaughter the she-camel, and by morning — when the reality of their crime and the certainty of divine punishment became clear to them — they found themselves overwhelmed with regret and remorse. However, this regret was not one of sincere repentance; it was the anguish of those who realize too late that destruction is inevitable. The Qur'an attributes the act to all of them collectively because they all consented to it and approved of it, even if only one individual physically carried out the deed. Their remorse came when the punishment was already at hand, and such regret is utterly useless — it neither averts Allah's decree nor earns His forgiveness, for it is the sorrow of despair, not the turning back of a repentant heart.
A Call to Reflection:
How often do we, like the people of Thamūd, ignore the signs of Allah that surround us every day? The sun that rises, the rain that falls, the breath in our lungs — all are signs calling us to our Creator. Yet we delay, we hesitate, we make excuses, until the moment of reckoning arrives and regret fills our hearts. But unlike them, we still have time. The door of repentance is open until the sun rises from the west. Do not wait until you see the punishment to feel remorse. Turn back to Allah now, with a sincere heart, and He will forgive you, for He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving. Let the story of Thamūd be a lesson: their regret did not save them, but your sincere repentance today can save you. Do not be among those who say "I wish I had" when it is too late.
