Word Meanings:

  • "Rabbi" (رَبِّ): My Lord, the One who nurtures, sustains, and has full authority over all affairs.
  • "Najjini" (نَجِّنِي): Save me, rescue me, and deliver me from harm.
  • "Wa ahli" (وَأَهْلِي): And my family — those closest to me, including my household and loved ones.
  • "Mimma ya'malun" (مِمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ): From what they do — referring to the abominable sin and its consequences.

Explanation of the Verse:

This is the heartfelt supplication of Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) at the peak of crisis. After he had exhausted every means of guidance and admonition with his people — warning them against their filthy practices and calling them to purity and righteousness — they rejected him and persisted in their transgression. At that moment of utter despair regarding their repentance, Lut turned to his Lord with a sincere and urgent plea.

He did not ask for worldly power or revenge against his oppressors. Rather, he sought deliverance — for himself and for his believing family — from two things: first, from the moral contamination of their evil deeds, and second, from the severe punishment that was inevitably descending upon them. His words "mimma ya'malun" (from what they do) encompass both the sin itself and its dire consequences, for the punishment is a direct result of the deed.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: when a believer finds himself surrounded by corruption and sees no hope of reform, the most powerful weapon is sincere supplication to Allah. Lut did not rely on his own strength or strategy; he submitted the matter entirely to his Lord. He also showed remarkable care for his family, prioritizing their safety and salvation — a reminder for every believer to be concerned about the spiritual and physical well-being of their loved ones.

Notice also the beautiful manner of the supplication: Lut begins with "Rabbi" (My Lord), acknowledging Allah's lordship and mercy. He asks specifically for salvation, not merely for comfort. This is the prayer of one who truly understands that Allah alone is the Protector and Deliverer in times of trial.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless message for every Muslim. In a world filled with temptations and moral decay, we are not left without recourse. The doors of heaven are always open for those who call upon their Lord with sincerity. Just as Allah answered Lut's prayer and saved him and his family from destruction, He will answer the prayers of His believing servants who turn to Him in times of need.

Let us learn from this noble Prophet's example: to be firm in our faith, to care deeply for our families, and to never lose hope in Allah's mercy and power. And let us remember that the greatest salvation is not merely from physical harm, but from being contaminated by sin and losing our connection with our Creator. May Allah protect us all from evil deeds and their consequences, and may He grant us the same sincere spirit of supplication that Lut possessed. Ameen.
