Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fattaqullāh (فاتقوا الله): Fear Allah, be mindful of Him, and guard yourselves against His punishment by fulfilling His commands and abstaining from what He has forbidden.
- Wa Aṭīʿūn (وأطيعون): And obey me — meaning follow Prophet Shuʿayb (peace be upon him) in what he calls to of monotheism, righteousness, and moral conduct.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Prophet Shuʿayb (peace be upon him) addresses his people — the inhabitants of Aykah, a land of dense, intertwined trees — urging them with the most profound and comprehensive advice. He calls them to two essential principles that guarantee success in this life and the Hereafter:
First, consciousness of Allah (taqwā): This means to place a protective barrier between oneself and Allah's displeasure by sincerely obeying His commands and sincerely avoiding His prohibitions. It is a state of the heart that translates into action — a life lived with constant awareness that Allah sees all, hears all, and will hold every soul accountable.
Second, obedience to the Messenger: Obeying Prophet Shuʿayb is not merely following a man, but following the divine revelation he carries. His obedience is inseparable from obedience to Allah, for he does not speak from personal desire but from what has been revealed to him. This obedience includes embracing monotheism, upholding justice in trade and dealings (which was a central call of Shuʿayb to his people), and reforming their corrupt practices.
The verse comes as a direct and sincere call — a fatherly and prophetic plea — urging them to turn back to their Lord before the punishment they were warned about descends upon them. It reflects the mercy of Allah, Who sends messengers to guide humanity, and the patience of His prophets, who never tire of calling their people to what is good.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this beautiful verse carries a timeless message for every human being. The call of Shuʿayb is the call of all prophets: to be conscious of Allah in every moment and to follow the guidance He sent. Imagine a life where you are always aware that Allah is with you — in your business, your family, your words, and your deeds. Would you cheat in a transaction? Would you harm another soul? Would you persist in sin?
This verse invites you to a life of peace, integrity, and purpose. It is an invitation to taste the sweetness of faith by aligning your will with the will of your Creator. The path of taqwā and obedience is not a path of restriction; it is a path of liberation — liberation from the slavery of desires, from the anxiety of a purposeless life, and from the fear of what lies ahead.
Allah, in His infinite mercy, did not leave you without guidance. He sent messengers, revealed books, and made the path clear. The only question is: will you respond to the call? Will you be among those who say, "We hear and we obey"? The doors of repentance are open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not delay — for the heart that turns to Allah finds a peace that nothing in this world can provide.
May Allah make us among those who truly fear Him and obey His messengers, and may He grant us steadfastness on the path of truth until we meet Him with hearts pure and souls content.
