Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Ajr" (أجر): Reward, payment, or compensation given in return for a service.
- "Rabbi al-'Alameen" (رب العالمين): The Lord of all the worlds—the Creator, Sustainer, and Sovereign of everything that exists, from the smallest atom to the vastest galaxies.
Explanation of the Verse:
Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) addresses his people with a profound declaration of sincerity and selflessness. He says: *"I do not ask you for any payment for this call to faith and righteousness."* He makes it crystal clear that he seeks no material gain, no status, no worldly benefit, and no favor from them in return for conveying the message of Allah. His sole expectation of reward rests with Allah alone—the Lord of all the worlds.
This statement reflects the purest form of devotion and integrity. The prophets of Allah, throughout history, never sought compensation from their communities. Their mission was driven by love for humanity, compassion for their fellow beings, and an earnest desire to guide them toward salvation and eternal success. They understood that their true reward lies with their Creator, who never fails to compensate those who strive in His cause—whether in this life or in the Hereafter.
This verse also serves as a timeless lesson for all who carry the message of truth: sincerity must be the foundation of every call to goodness. When a person invites others to what is right, they should do so purely for the sake of Allah, not for personal gain or recognition. The reward of Allah is far greater and more enduring than anything this world could offer.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Imagine the beauty of this message—a messenger who gives everything for the sake of Allah, expecting nothing from people but their own happiness and success. This is the noble character of the prophets, and it is an invitation for us to purify our intentions in all our deeds. When we help others, teach them, or guide them, let us do so with the same spirit: seeking only the pleasure of Allah. For indeed, the One who created the heavens and the earth, who provides for all His creatures, will never let the sincere efforts of His servants go to waste. Trust in Him, and let your heart be at peace, knowing that your reward is secure with the Lord of all the worlds.
