Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ذِكْرَى (Dhikrā): A reminder, admonition, or exhortation that awakens the heart and mind to the truth.
- ظَالِمِينَ (Zālimīn): Wrongdoers, oppressors, or those who act unjustly.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse concludes the preceding statement about how Allah never destroyed any town or community without first sending warners to them. The word ذِكْرَى (a reminder) explains the purpose of sending these messengers: they came to deliver a reminder and a wake-up call to humanity, alerting them to the path of salvation and warning them of the consequences of disbelief and sin. The messengers were not sent to burden people, but to guide them, remind them of their Lord, and show them what leads to their success in this life and the Hereafter.
Then Allah says, "وَمَا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ" (And We were not wrongdoers). This is a profound declaration of divine justice. Allah is emphasizing that He does not punish anyone without first establishing the proof against them. He sends messengers, reveals scriptures, and gives clear signs so that no one can claim ignorance on the Day of Judgment. Punishment only comes after the message has been delivered and the warning has been given. Allah, the Most Just, never acts unjustly toward His creation. If He were to punish without warning, that would be injustice—and He is far above any form of oppression.
This verse carries a beautiful reassurance: Allah's mercy precedes His wrath. He gives ample opportunity for people to reflect, repent, and return to Him before any consequence arrives. His justice is perfect, and His patience is immense.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the immense mercy and justice of your Lord. He does not leave you without guidance. He sends reminders—through the Qur'an, through prophets, through the call of truth that reaches your ears. Every time you hear the words of Allah, it is a reminder meant to save you, not to burden you. The fact that you are reading this now is a sign of His care for you. He wants you to succeed. He has given you the Book, the Prophet ﷺ, and countless signs in the universe and in yourself. Do not let these reminders pass you by. Respond to His call, turn to Him in sincerity, and you will find a Lord who is ever-merciful, ever-just, and ever-loving toward those who seek Him. The door of repentance is open, and He is waiting for you to walk through it.
