Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- تَنَزَّلَتْ (Tanazzalat): To descend gradually or be sent down upon someone.
- الشَّيَاطِين (Ash-Shayateen): The devils among the jinn, the rebellious and evil beings who are barred from accessing the heavens.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse refutes the false claim made by the disbelievers of Makkah, who alleged that the Qur'an was inspired or brought to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by the devils. Allah, the Exalted, declares this accusation utterly false and impossible. The Qur'an is the pure, untainted word of Allah, and it is absolutely inconceivable that the devils would descend with it or that they could even attempt such a thing. The devils are, in fact, the enemies of all that is good and true; they are barred from the heavenly realms, pelted with flaming meteors whenever they try to eavesdrop on the divine revelation. Their very nature is corruption and misguidance, while the Qur'an is a book of guidance, mercy, and light. How could the source of darkness ever bring the source of light? This verse stands as a powerful defense of the Qur'an's divine origin, reassuring the believers and silencing the slanderers.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
O beloved reader, ponder deeply upon this magnificent truth: the Qur'an that we hold in our hands is not the whisper of a devil, nor the invention of a poet, nor the fabrication of a soothsayer. It is the very speech of Allah, the Lord of all worlds, sent down upon the heart of His final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), through the trustworthy Spirit, Jibreel (Gabriel). This is a book that challenges humanity to produce even a single chapter like it, and all of creation—humans and jinn alike—has failed to do so. Let this certainty fill your heart with awe and love for your Creator, and let it draw you closer to the Qur'an, reciting it, understanding it, and living by it. For in it lies your honor in this life and your salvation in the Hereafter. The devils have no power over the sincere servants of Allah, and the Qur'an is a fortress for whoever clings to it. So hold fast to this divine rope, and you will never be led astray.
