Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qaryah (قَرْيَةٍ): A town, city, or community — referring here to any civilization or people.
- Mundhirūn (مُنذِرُونَ): Warners — messengers sent by Allah to caution their people against disbelief and wrongdoing, and to call them to the truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse establishes a profound and universal principle of divine justice: Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, never destroys a community or civilization without first sending them warners. Throughout history, whenever a people strayed into corruption, polytheism, or tyranny, Allah would raise among them messengers and prophets to remind them of their Lord, to call them back to righteousness, and to warn them of the consequences of their actions. These warners came with clear signs, scriptures, and miracles — not to coerce, but to guide. They presented the path of salvation and warned against the path of destruction. Only after this clear communication — after the message was delivered, understood, and then rejected — did divine punishment descend. This reflects Allah's perfect fairness: He does not punish out of ignorance or injustice, but only after establishing the proof against a people. No soul is held accountable for what it was never told. This is a testament to the Lord's mercy — that He gives every nation ample opportunity to reform before any consequence befalls them.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this divine mercy. Your Lord does not hasten to punish; He sends guidance first. He sends messengers, scriptures, and reminders — all as acts of compassion, so that you may never be caught unaware. Today, we have the greatest of all warners — Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and the final, preserved revelation, the Qur'an. This is not a burden; it is a gift. It is Allah's way of saying: "I love you, so I have shown you the way." Let this verse inspire you to appreciate the blessing of guidance, to listen to the call of truth, and to respond before it is too late. Allah's door of repentance is open, and His mercy precedes His wrath. Do not wait for the warning to become a punishment — embrace the warning as a mercy, and let it transform your heart toward your Creator.
