Surah Ash-Shu'ara — Verse 221

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah addresses the disbelievers who falsely claimed that the Qur'an was inspired by devils or that a devil was whispering it to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah refutes this slander with a rhetorical question that carries both a challenge and a clarification: *"Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?"*

The answer, implied and then elaborated in the following verses, is that the devils do not descend upon prophets or righteous messengers. Rather, they descend upon every lying, sinful person — especially the soothsayers and fortune-tellers who claim knowledge of the unseen. These devils eavesdrop on the heavenly realm, snatching fragments of speech from the angels, and then deliver these stolen pieces to their human collaborators. The soothsayer might utter one true word, but then fabricates and adds more than a hundred lies to it, deceiving the people who follow them.

This verse serves as a powerful defense of the Qur'an's divine origin. The Qur'an is pure, truthful, and filled with wisdom and guidance — qualities that can never be associated with the whispers of devils. The devils are enemies of truth and goodness; they inspire falsehood, corruption, and sin.
