📖 English Meaning
Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Hal unabbi'ukum" – Shall I inform you / Shall I tell you?
  • "'Ala man" – Upon whom?
  • "Tanazzalu" – Descend / come down upon.
  • "Ash-Shayateen" – The devils (plural of Shaytan, meaning Satan and his forces from among the jinn).

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah addresses the disbelievers who falsely claimed that the Qur'an was inspired by devils or that a devil was whispering it to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah refutes this slander with a rhetorical question that carries both a challenge and a clarification: *"Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?"*

The answer, implied and then elaborated in the following verses, is that the devils do not descend upon prophets or righteous messengers. Rather, they descend upon every lying, sinful person — especially the soothsayers and fortune-tellers who claim knowledge of the unseen. These devils eavesdrop on the heavenly realm, snatching fragments of speech from the angels, and then deliver these stolen pieces to their human collaborators. The soothsayer might utter one true word, but then fabricates and adds more than a hundred lies to it, deceiving the people who follow them.

This verse serves as a powerful defense of the Qur'an's divine origin. The Qur'an is pure, truthful, and filled with wisdom and guidance — qualities that can never be associated with the whispers of devils. The devils are enemies of truth and goodness; they inspire falsehood, corruption, and sin. How could they possibly be the source of a Book that commands justice, mercy, purity, and the worship of the One True God?

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, reflect deeply on this verse and let it strengthen your certainty in the Qur'an. The Qur'an is a light that illuminates hearts, a healing for souls, and a guide to the straight path. Its eloquence, its profound meanings, and its transformative power are clear proofs that it comes from Allah alone — not from any human, and certainly not from devils.

When you recite the Qur'an, you are connecting with the words of your Creator. It is a conversation between you and Allah, a source of peace in times of distress, and a compass that directs you toward eternal success. Embrace it, ponder its verses, and let it reshape your life. For in it lies the ultimate truth that liberates you from darkness and leads you to the everlasting bliss of Paradise.

And beware of those who claim knowledge of the unseen through soothsayers and fortune-tellers, for they follow the footsteps of the devils. True knowledge of the unseen belongs to Allah alone, and the only reliable guidance is that which comes through His revealed Books and His chosen Messengers. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from the whispers of Shaytan.
