Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • As-Samee' (السَّمِيعُ): The All-Hearing — He who hears everything, including the most subtle of sounds, whispered prayers, and the silent movements of the heart.
  • Al-'Aleem (الْعَلِيمُ): The All-Knowing — He whose knowledge encompasses all things, both apparent and hidden, including intentions, thoughts, and deeds.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah reassures His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and through him, every believer — of His perfect awareness and complete knowledge. The verse comes as a comforting conclusion to a passage describing the Prophet's devotion in prayer, standing alone at night and moving among those who bow and prostrate with him.

Allah tells us: "Indeed, He — He alone — is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."

This means that Allah hears every word of your recitation, every whisper of your supplication, and every breath of your remembrance. Nothing escapes His hearing — not the quietest verse you recite in the depths of the night, nor the softest plea you make in your moments of need. And He knows your intentions — the sincerity behind your actions, the purity of your motives, and the truth of what lies in your heart.

The verse carries a beautiful message of intimacy and connection: when you stand in prayer, when you remember Allah, when you turn to Him in your solitude — He is there, hearing you and knowing you. This is not a distant, indifferent deity, but a Lord who is intimately aware of His servant's state at every moment.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, let this verse fill your heart with tranquility and hope. When you feel alone in your struggles, remember that Allah hears your silent cries. When you strive to do good, know that He sees your efforts and knows your sincere intentions — even if no one else acknowledges them.

This verse invites you to cultivate a living, conscious relationship with your Creator. Speak to Him freely, for He hears you. Act with sincerity, for He knows your heart. And take comfort in the fact that the One who hears and knows all is also the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate — and He will never let the good you do go to waste.

So, dear reader, let this awareness transform your worship: pray with presence, knowing you are heard; act with sincerity, knowing you are seen; and live with hope, knowing that your Lord — the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing — is always with you, in every moment and every state.
