Key Words and Their Meanings:
- الْمَلَإِ (Al-Mala'): The chiefs, nobles, and leading figures of a community whose opinions carry weight.
- حَوْلَهُ (Hawlahu): Around him; those in his immediate circle.
- سَاحِرٌ (Sahir): A sorcerer or magician.
- عَلِيمٌ ('Alim): One who is profoundly knowledgeable and skilled in a particular field — here, an expert in sorcery.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) cast his staff and it transformed into a living serpent before the eyes of Pharaoh and his assembly, Pharaoh was shaken to his core. Yet instead of acknowledging the evident truth of Allah's power, he turned to the dignitaries surrounding him — his trusted advisors and the elite of his court — and addressed them with calculated words: "Indeed, this man is a skilled sorcerer, deeply learned in the art of magic."
Pharaoh's aim was clear: to plant doubt in their hearts and to frame Musa's miracle as mere trickery, so that the people would not be swayed by what they had witnessed. He knew that if he could label Musa as a magician, he could then rally his court against him, dismiss his message, and preserve his own authority. This was a strategic move to undermine the divine sign and to prevent any of his people from believing in Musa's call to worship Allah alone.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
How telling it is that when the truth appears with unmistakable clarity, those who are attached to their power and worldly status often rush to label it with falsehood! Pharaoh saw the staff become a serpent — a clear sign that no human could replicate — yet he called it sorcery. He did not say, "Let us investigate," or "Let us reflect." Instead, he immediately sought to discredit the miracle to protect his throne.
This verse invites every believer to ponder: Are we like Pharaoh, closing our eyes to the signs of Allah when they challenge our comfort or desires? Or are we like the sincere seekers who, upon seeing the truth, submit to it wholeheartedly? The Qur'an is filled with signs that call us to reflect — the precision of creation, the harmony of the universe, the revelation itself. Let us not be among those who turn away from clear signs out of pride or fear of change. Rather, let our hearts be open, our minds be humble, and our souls be eager to embrace the guidance of our Lord, for in that embrace lies true success in this life and the Hereafter.
