Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Zawj (زوج): Here it means "kind" or "species" — referring to the various types and categories of vegetation.
  • Karīm (كريم): Generous, noble, and excellent — describing plants that are beneficial, beautiful, and of great value to humans and animals alike.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Exalted, draws the attention of those who deny the truth to one of the most evident signs of His power and wisdom: the earth beneath their feet. He asks, rhetorically: "Do they not look at the earth — how much We have caused to grow therein of every noble, beneficial kind?"

The verse invites reflection upon the countless species of plants, crops, fruits, and vegetation that spring forth from the same soil, each with its own unique form, color, taste, and benefit. Some nourish humans, others feed animals, and all serve a purpose in the delicate balance of life. This diversity and perfection cannot be the work of chance or nature itself — it is the handiwork of the Lord of all worlds, Who alone has the power to bring forth life from dead earth.

The word "karīm" (noble/generous) highlights that these plants are not merely abundant but are also of immense benefit and beauty — a sign of Allah's generosity toward His creation. The fact that the earth produces such variety from a single source of water and soil is a clear demonstration of Allah's perfect power and meticulous design.

This verse serves as a gentle yet profound call to open one's eyes and ponder: if you can see the earth teeming with life and provision, how can you deny the One Who created it all? The very ground you walk upon testifies to His existence, His mercy, and His ability to resurrect the dead — just as He revives the barren earth with vegetation, He will revive the bodies of mankind on the Day of Judgment.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Beloved reader, look around you — at the fruits you eat, the green fields you pass, the flowers that delight your eyes. Every leaf that sways in the wind is a silent messenger pointing to its Creator. Allah did not create all of this for no purpose; He created it as a sign for those who reflect, and as a provision for those who are grateful. So let your heart soften, let your mind ponder, and let your tongue utter: "SubhanAllah — Glory be to Allah, the Best of Creators." For indeed, in the earth's abundant harvests lies an undeniable proof that your Lord is All-Powerful over everything, and His mercy encompasses all that He has made. Will you not then turn to Him with a grateful and believing heart?

📜 Verse 5-9 — Ash-Shu'ara

And no revelation comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.
For they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule.
Did they not look at the earth - how much We have produced therein from every noble kind?
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
