Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- عَدُوٌّ لِّي (aduw-wun lī): An enemy to me; meaning something that is hostile, opposed, and distant from one's allegiance.
- إِلَّا (illā): Except; here it is an interrupted exception (istithnā' munqaṭi'), meaning "but" or "however."
- رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ (Rabb al-'Ālamīn): The Lord of all worlds—the Creator, Sustainer, and Sovereign of everything that exists.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Prophet Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) continues his powerful address to his people, declaring with absolute clarity: "Indeed, they are an enemy to me—except the Lord of all worlds." Here, he refers to the idols his people worshipped—lifeless stones and carved figures that could neither hear, nor see, nor benefit, nor harm anyone. These false deities, he proclaims, are his enemies. Why? Because they are falsehood itself—they have no reality, no power, and no right to be worshipped. They are not merely neutral objects; they are hostile to every sincere soul who seeks the truth, for they stand as barriers between humanity and their Creator.
But then comes the beautiful exception: "Except the Lord of all worlds." This is not a continuation of the list of deities—rather, it is a decisive break. Ibrāhīm is saying: Those idols are my enemies, but the Lord of all worlds—He alone is my Protector, my Helper, and my Beloved. He is the One who created me, guides me, feeds me, heals me when I am sick, causes me to die, and will resurrect me on the Day of Judgment. He is the One whose mercy I hope for, and from Him alone I seek forgiveness for my shortcomings.
This statement is a declaration of loyalty and disavowal. Ibrāhīm disowns every false object of worship and pledges his entire being to the One true God—the Lord of all creation. It is a lesson for every believer: to love what Allah loves, to hate what He hates, and to place one's complete trust in Him alone.
Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, contemplate the courage and clarity of Ibrāhīm's words. He stood alone against an entire society steeped in idolatry, yet he did not waver. He declared his enmity to falsehood and his love for the Truth. This is the essence of Islamic monotheism (Tawḥīd)—to purify your heart from all attachments except Allah, and to recognize that every false object of worship—whether it be a statue, wealth, status, or desire—is ultimately your enemy, because it distracts you from the One who truly loves you and sustains you. The Lord of all worlds is your true Friend. Turn to Him, rely on Him, and you will find peace that nothing else can provide.
