"By Allah, we were indeed in manifest error
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • تَاللَّهِ — "By Allah" — an oath of swearing, emphasizing the truthfulness and seriousness of what is being said.
  • إِن كُنَّا — "Indeed we were" — a construction that affirms a past state with certainty.
  • لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ — "in manifest error" — a clear, evident, and unmistakable misguidance that leaves no room for doubt.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah narrates to us the scene of the dwellers of Hellfire as they argue and reproach one another. Those who were led astray — the followers — turn to those whom they worshipped and adored besides Allah, whether they were humans, idols, or devils, and they swear by Allah Himself, saying: "By Allah, we were indeed in clear, manifest error."

They openly confess, with full acknowledgment and regret, that their misguidance was not something hidden or ambiguous — it was plain and obvious. They admit that they had equated created beings with the Lord of all the worlds, the Only One worthy of worship. They recognize now, in the agony of regret, that their deviation was evident, yet they followed their desires and those who called them to falsehood. This confession, however, comes too late — it brings them no benefit, only an increase in sorrow and loss.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder for us in this life: the path of truth is clear, and the path of misguidance is also clear. Allah has sent His messengers, revealed His books, and placed within every human being a natural disposition (fitrah) that recognizes the Oneness of Allah. When a person strays, it is not because the truth was hidden from them, but because they chose to follow their whims, their desires, or the whispers of those who mislead them.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart! The people of Hellfire admitted their error only when it was too late. But you, here and now, have the precious opportunity to return to Allah, to correct your path, and to worship Him alone. Do not wait until the moment when regret will be of no avail. Embrace the pure message of Islam — the worship of the One True God — and let your life be guided by His revelation. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Turn to Him now, and you will find Him Forgiving and Merciful. This is the ultimate success — to live in submission to Allah and to meet Him with a heart that is pure and devoted to Him alone.

And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.
96قَالُوا وَهُمْ فِيهَا يَخْتَصِمُونَ
They will say while they dispute therein,
97تَاللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ
"By Allah, we were indeed in manifest error
98إِذْ نُسَوِّيكُم بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.
99وَمَا أَضَلَّنَا إِلَّا الْمُجْرِمُونَ
And no one misguided us except the criminals.
