📖 English Meaning
When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Nusawweekum (نُسَوِّيكُم): We made you equal, likened you, or equated you with something else.
  • Bi-Rabbil-'Alameen (بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ): With the Lord of all the worlds — the Creator, Sustainer, and Sovereign of everything that exists.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of the speech of the misguided people in Hellfire, as they argue with those who led them astray. They confess, with deep regret and acknowledgment of their error: "By Allah, we were clearly lost in this world when we equated you — these idols, leaders, or false deities — with the Lord of all the worlds."

They admit that they gave these created beings the same reverence, obedience, and devotion that is due exclusively to Allah — the One who created the heavens and the earth, who provides for all creatures, and who alone deserves worship. They acknowledge that their worship of these false objects was a grave injustice and a profound deviation from the truth. They further explain that it was the criminals among them — those who invited them to shirk (associating partners with Allah) — who caused them to fall into this miserable state, and they followed them blindly.

This verse highlights the severity of shirk: equating the creation with the Creator, the servant with the Master, the weak with the Almighty. It is a reminder that no being — no matter how great, powerful, or revered — deserves even a fraction of the devotion that belongs to Allah alone.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this confession from the inhabitants of Hellfire. They now see clearly what they could not see in the worldly life: that nothing deserves your love, fear, hope, or worship except Allah — the Lord of all the worlds. He is the One who created you, sustains you, and will judge you. How can a human being, an idol, or any created thing be placed on the same level as the Creator of the universe?

This verse is a powerful invitation to purify your faith (tawheed) and to ensure that your heart, your tongue, and your actions are devoted solely to Allah. Do not wait until the Day of Judgment to realize this truth. Embrace it now, and let your life be a living testimony to the oneness of Allah. The doors of mercy and forgiveness are wide open for those who repent and return to their Lord. Do not let anything or anyone take the place that belongs exclusively to your Creator — for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, and He loves those who turn to Him in sincerity.
