Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Water from the sky" (min al-sama' ma'): Rain sent down from the heavens, a mercy and provision from Allah.
- "Revived the earth after its death" (fa-ahya bihi al-arda min ba'di mawtiha): Bringing barren, dry land back to life with vegetation and greenery after it had been lifeless and arid.
- "They will surely say" (la-yaqulunna): An emphatic affirmation—they will answer without hesitation.
- "They do not reason" (la ya'qilun): They fail to use their intellect to draw the inevitable conclusion from their own admission.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, if you were to ask these polytheists—who deny the Oneness of Allah and worship idols—a simple, undeniable question: "Who sends down rain from the sky, and with it brings forth life from a barren, dead earth, causing plants to sprout and the land to flourish?"—they would not hesitate to answer: "Allah!" They know this in their hearts, and their tongues would confess it without any doubt. They cannot attribute this to their idols, for they know full well that their carved stones have no power to send rain or grow crops.
So Allah instructs His Prophet to say: "All praise belongs to Allah!"—meaning, praise be to Allah who has established His proof against you through your own admission. You have testified that Allah alone is the Creator and Sustainer, the One who gives life and causes growth, and yet you still associate partners with Him in worship. This is a clear contradiction that exposes the weakness of your position.
But the reality is that most of them do not truly reason. If they used their intellects properly, they would realize that the One who creates and provides deserves worship alone, and that those who cannot create, provide, or benefit in any way have no right to be worshipped alongside Him. Their problem is not a lack of knowledge—for they know the truth—but a failure to apply their reasoning to reach the correct conclusion. They have let blind following, arrogance, and love of their forefathers' ways cloud their judgment.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse is a beautiful reminder for every human being, in every time and place. Look around you—at the rain that falls, the crops that grow, the earth that comes alive after drought. Who is behind all of this? Your own nature tells you it is Allah, the One and Only. So why do we hesitate to submit to Him alone? Why do we let distractions, desires, or societal pressures pull us away from the pure truth that our hearts already know?
Islam is not a religion of blind faith—it is a religion of sound reasoning and clear evidence. Allah invites you to reflect, to think, and to use your intellect. When you see the signs of His mercy around you, let them lead you to gratitude and worship. Say with your heart and tongue: "Alhamdulillah—all praise belongs to Allah"—and let that praise transform your life into one of submission, peace, and purpose. The door of guidance is open, and the proof is already within you. Will you not reason?
