Surah Aal-Imran — Verse 2

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse is a profound declaration of the oneness of Allah and His unique attributes. Allah informs us that He alone is the true deity worthy of worship — there is no god, no lord, and no object of devotion that deserves your heart, your prayer, or your obedience except Him alone. Every other so-called deity, whether a stone idol, a celestial body, a human being, or a worldly desire, is false and unworthy of worship.

Allah describes Himself with two magnificent attributes that encompass His perfection and His absolute sovereignty:

First, Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living) — His life is perfect and complete, not like the life of His creatures. It is a life that is eternal, without any beginning or end, without sleep, without weariness, without weakness, and without any form of deficiency. He has always been alive and will always remain alive.

Second, Al-Qayyum (The Self-Subsisting) — He stands independent of all things, needing nothing and no one. He does not require any support, assistance, or sustenance from His creation. Rather, it is He who sustains everything. The heavens, the earth, the angels, the humans, the animals, the plants — every single creature in existence depends on Him for its continued existence at every single moment. If He were to withdraw His support for even the blink of an eye, the entire universe would collapse into nothingness.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the greatness of this verse. The One who created you, who gives you life, who sustains you every moment, who provides for you, who hears your whispers, and who knows your innermost thoughts — He is the only One worthy of your worship. He does not need your worship, but you desperately need Him. Your heart finds its true peace only when it is connected to Al-Hayy Al-Qayyum.

This verse is an invitation to free yourself from the chains of false gods — whether they are statues, money, status, or fleeting desires — and to submit your entire being to the One who truly deserves your devotion. When you place your trust in the Ever-Living, Self-Sustaining Lord, you will never be disappointed, for He never dies and His support never fails. Turn to Him today, and you will find a Lord who is always there, always listening, and always capable of answering your prayers.
