Explanation of the Verse:
This verse takes us back to a remarkable moment in the story of Maryam (Mary), peace be upon her, and her mother — a moment that carries profound lessons of sincere devotion and trust in Allah. The verse begins with "When the wife of 'Imran said," and the implied command is: "Remember, O Messenger, when she said..." — inviting us to reflect deeply on this extraordinary event.
The wife of 'Imran, the mother of Maryam, upon learning of her pregnancy, turned to her Lord with a heart overflowing with faith and gratitude. She said: "My Lord, indeed I have vowed to You what is in my womb, dedicated entirely to Your service." She pledged that her child would be completely devoted to the worship of Allah and the service of the Sacred House (Bayt al-Maqdis in Jerusalem) — free from all worldly occupations and distractions. This was a noble tradition among the righteous of that time: to dedicate a child solely to the service of Allah's house.
It is noteworthy that she expressed this vow while the child was still in her womb, not knowing whether it would be male or female. In that era, only males were typically dedicated to such service, yet her sincere intention was what mattered most to her. She then humbly supplicated: "So accept this from me. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." She acknowledged that Allah hears all supplications and knows the purity of one's intentions — a beautiful expression of complete reliance on Allah's acceptance.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless message for every believer. Look at the profound sincerity of this woman — she did not wait for her child to be born to make her intention; she dedicated her child to Allah even before birth. What a beautiful example of prioritizing the worship of Allah and raising a generation connected to the Divine!
Dear reader, imagine the power of a mother's sincere intention. This woman's prayer was answered in the most magnificent way — Allah accepted her offering and blessed her with Maryam, a pure and righteous daughter, from whose lineage came Prophet 'Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him, one of the greatest messengers of Allah. This teaches us that when we sincerely dedicate ourselves and our families to Allah, He honors us beyond our imagination.
The verse also reminds us of the beauty of making vows and commitments for the sake of Allah — not as a burden, but as an expression of love and devotion. How many of us have dedicated our children, our time, or our wealth to Allah's service? Even a simple, sincere intention to raise our children upon righteousness, to teach them the Qur'an, and to guide them to the straight path is a form of dedication that Allah loves.
Finally, note her beautiful closing words: "Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." She did not merely ask — she affirmed her complete trust in Allah's attributes. She knew that Allah hears every whisper of her heart and knows the truth of her intention. This is the essence of true faith: to combine action with sincere supplication, and to place complete trust in Allah's wisdom and acceptance.
Let this verse inspire you to renew your own intentions — to dedicate yourself, your family, and your efforts to Allah's pleasure, knowing that He hears you and knows your sincerity. And when you do so with a pure heart, His acceptance and blessings will surely follow, just as they did for the wife of 'Imran.
