Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Ahzab (الأحزاب): The confederates or allied tribes that gathered together to attack the believers in Medina during the Battle of the Trench (Ghazwat al-Khandaq).
  • Wa'adana (وعدنا): Promised us — referring to what Allah and His Messenger had foretold regarding trials, hardships, and eventual victory.
  • Tasleem (تسليماً): Complete submission and surrender to Allah's will and decree, with full acceptance and obedience.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the true believers witnessed the mighty confederate armies — the Quraysh, the Ghatafan, the Banu Qurayzah, and their allies — surrounding Medina and laying siege upon it, they did not panic or lose heart. Instead, they recalled the promise that Allah and His Messenger had given them. They remembered that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had foretold trials and tribulations before the victory, and they recognized that this moment of intense hardship was precisely what had been promised. So they said: "This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us" — meaning the test of faith, the severity of the ordeal, and the nearness of divine help. And they affirmed: "Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth" — for they saw with certainty that the promise was being fulfilled before their very eyes.

This sight of the enemy forces, rather than weakening their resolve, only increased them in faith and submission. Their hearts grew firmer, their certainty deepened, and their surrender to Allah's decree became more complete. They understood that behind this trial lay a greater wisdom — that victory comes after patience, and that Allah never breaks His promise to those who truly believe.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the nature of trials in the life of a believer. When difficulties arise — whether personal, familial, or communal — the believer does not see them as random misfortunes. Rather, they see them as part of Allah's divine plan, a test that purifies the soul and elevates one's rank. The believers of that time turned their greatest fear into a source of strength by connecting it to the promise of Allah. They understood that hardship is not a sign of Allah's abandonment, but a sign of His care — for He tests those He loves to bring out their best.

Dear reader, when you face your own "ahzab" — the confederates of worry, illness, financial strain, or social pressure — remember this verse. Say with full conviction: "This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us." Know that every trial carries within it the seed of victory, and that your patience and trust in Allah will not go unrewarded. The more you submit to His will, the more your faith grows, and the closer His help draws. For indeed, with every hardship comes ease, and Allah's promise is true — He never fails those who put their trust in Him. Let this verse be a source of comfort and strength, and let your response to trials be like that of the believers: increased faith and complete submission.

📜 Verse 20-24 — Al-Ahzab

They think the companies have not [yet] withdrawn. And if the companies should come [again], they would wish they were in the desert among the bedouins, inquiring [from afar] about your news. And if they should be among you, they would not fight except for a little.
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.
And when the believers saw the companies, they said, "This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth." And it increased them only in faith and acceptance.
Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration -
That Allah may reward the truthful for their truth and punish the hypocrites if He wills or accept their repentance. Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
