Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ajr (أجر): Reward, compensation, or payment given in return for a service.
- Fa huwa lakum (فهو لكم): "It is for you" — meaning, whatever reward is mentioned, it belongs to you, not to me.
- In ajriya illa 'ala Allah (إن أجري إلا على الله): "My reward is only upon Allah" — meaning, no one but Allah is responsible for rewarding me.
- Shahid (شهيد): Witness — One who sees and knows all things, nothing escapes His knowledge.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, say clearly to those who reject the message: "Whatever reward I might have asked you for — and I have asked you for nothing — it is yours. I do not seek any payment or compensation from you for the guidance and good I have brought. My reward is with Allah alone, and He is sufficient for me."
This verse is a profound declaration of the Prophet's sincerity and selflessness. He did not call people to faith for personal gain, wealth, or status. His only motive was the love of Allah and the desire to see humanity saved from destruction. The Prophet's reward — his true recompense — lies entirely with Allah, the All-Seeing, the All-Knowing.
And Allah is a Witness over everything. He witnesses the Prophet's efforts, his struggles, his patience, and his truthfulness. He also witnesses the deeds of those who reject, mock, or oppose the message. Nothing is hidden from Him — not a single word, thought, or action. On the Day of Judgment, He will reward each soul according to what it has earned: the believers with Paradise, and the disbelievers with the just consequence of their rejection.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim and every caller to Islam. The Prophet ﷺ — the best of creation — asked for no worldly reward for his mission. He endured hardship, persecution, and exile, yet his eyes were fixed on Allah alone. How then can we, as his followers, seek fame, wealth, or praise in our efforts to spread goodness? Let this verse purify our intentions. When you give da'wah, teach, or help others, do it for Allah alone — for His reward is greater than anything this world can offer. And remember: Allah is Shahid — He sees every sincere effort, every tear shed in His cause, and every step taken toward Him. Nothing is wasted. Trust Him, and let your heart find peace in His promise.
