Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Musabbihīn (المُسَبِّحِينَ): Those who glorify Allah, declaring Him free from all imperfections, and who remember Him constantly in their prayers and daily life.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse refers to the story of Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him, who was swallowed by the great fish after he left his people in frustration before Allah commanded him to do so. When he found himself in the darkness of the fish's belly, deep beneath the ocean, he called out to his Lord with the famous supplication: "There is no deity except You; glory be to You; indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers."
The verse states: *"Had he not been of those who glorify Allah"* — meaning, had it not been for his previous record of abundant worship, sincere devotion, and constant remembrance of Allah before this trial befell him, and had it not been for his glorification of Allah while inside the fish's belly, he would have remained trapped there until the Day of Resurrection, and the fish's belly would have become his grave.
This highlights a profound spiritual principle: the deeds of worship and remembrance that a person performs in times of ease become a source of rescue and mercy in times of hardship. Prophet Yunus's consistent glorification of Allah was the very means by which Allah answered his call and delivered him from darkness to light.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder this beautiful lesson: the moments you spend in prayer, in remembrance of Allah, in glorifying His name — these are never wasted. They are treasures you store for the days when you will need them most. When trials come — and they come to everyone — it is your connection with Allah that will save you. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The example of the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not remember his Lord is like the example of the living and the dead." So make remembrance of Allah your constant companion. Glorify Him in the morning and the evening, in your prayers and in your daily activities. For when the storms of life rage around you, it is this very remembrance that will carry you through to safety, just as it carried Yunus from the depths of the sea to the shore of divine mercy.
