Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- فَالْتَقَمَهُ (Faltaqamahu): The whale swallowed him in one gulp, taking him whole into its belly.
- الْحُوتُ (Al-Hoot): The great fish or whale.
- مُلِيمٌ (Muleem): One who has brought blame upon himself; one who has committed an action that invites reproach and criticism.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him, left his people in anger before receiving Allah's explicit permission, and after he boarded a ship that was later overwhelmed by a violent storm, the sailors cast lots to lighten the ship's load. The lot fell upon Yunus, and he was thrown into the raging sea. At that very moment, Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, commanded a great whale to swallow him whole—not to destroy him, but to carry him as a captive passenger through the depths of the ocean.
The verse tells us that the whale gulped him down while he was مُلِيم—a man deserving of blame for his hastiness in leaving his people without divine authorization, and for boarding a ship that led him into this predicament. Yet, even in this state of being reproached, Allah's care for His prophet never ceased. The whale became a moving vessel, a living prison, and simultaneously a sanctuary that preserved him from drowning. This was not a punishment of annihilation, but a discipline of love—a means to purify and elevate him.
This scene carries profound lessons: even when a believer errs, Allah's mercy does not abandon him. The very creature that seemed to be a source of affliction became the means of his survival. The darkness of the whale's belly, the darkness of the sea, and the darkness of the night would soon become the backdrop for one of the most beautiful supplications ever uttered—"La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin" (There is no god but You, glory be to You, indeed I was among the wrongdoers).
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, see how Allah turned a moment of blame into a journey of spiritual awakening. If you find yourself in a situation where you feel you have failed or brought blame upon yourself, remember that Allah's door of repentance is always open. The whale that swallowed Yunus was not the end of his story—it was the beginning of his renewal. Your mistakes, however great, are not the end of yours. Turn to Allah in the depths of your hardship, and He will bring you out of darkness into light, just as He brought His beloved prophet out of the belly of the whale. No matter how far you have strayed, His mercy is nearer to you than your own jugular vein. Let this verse be a beacon of hope: your Lord does not abandon those who call upon Him, even when they are at their weakest and most blameworthy.
