Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fa āmanū — So they believed, meaning they affirmed and accepted the message brought to them.
  • Fa matta'nāhum — Then We gave them enjoyment, meaning We allowed them to continue living with provision and respite.
  • Ilā ḥīn — Until a specified time, meaning until the end of their appointed lifespans.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse concludes the story of Prophet Yūnus (Jonah), peace be upon him, who was sent to his people — a community of one hundred thousand or more. When they persisted in disbelief, he warned them of an impending punishment. As the signs of divine chastisement appeared and the punishment was about to descend upon them, they sincerely repented and believed in what he had brought. Their faith was genuine and heartfelt, not merely a desperate plea in the face of calamity.

Because of their sincere belief, Allah, in His infinite mercy and compassion, removed the punishment from them and granted them respite. He allowed them to continue enjoying their lives, their families, their provisions, and the blessings of this world until the natural end of their appointed terms. They were not destroyed, nor were they punished for their earlier transgression — instead, they were given a new lease on life, a fresh opportunity to live righteously and reap the rewards of their faith.

This verse beautifully illustrates a profound divine principle: sincere repentance and belief, even at the last moment before punishment, can avert Allah's wrath and open the doors of His mercy. It teaches us that no one is beyond redemption, and that Allah's mercy precedes His anger. The very fact that Allah mentions this in the Qur'an serves as an eternal beacon of hope for every sinner — no matter how far one has strayed, the door of repentance remains open until the soul reaches the throat or the sun rises from the west.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, reflect on this magnificent example of divine mercy. If a whole nation — despite its stubbornness and sin — could be forgiven when it turned back to Allah, how much more hopeful should you be? Your Lord is Al-Ghafūr (The Oft-Forgiving) and Ar-Raḥīm (The Most Merciful). He does not delight in punishing His servants; rather, He delights in their return to Him. The moment you sincerely turn to Allah — in prayer, in repentance, in seeking His guidance — He will embrace you with His mercy and grant you a life of contentment and blessing. Do not delay, for you do not know when your own "appointed time" will arrive. Seize this moment, and let this verse be the spark that ignites your journey back to your Creator.

📜 Verse 146-150 — As-Saffat

And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.
And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.
And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.
So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?
Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"
