Surah As-Saffat — Verse 176

• Afabiʿadhābinā (أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا): "Then is it with Our punishment..." – The particle *a* is for interrogation (expressing astonishment and rebuke), *fa* is for connection to what preceded, and *biʿadhābinā* means "with Our punishment."

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the context of the disbelievers' arrogant challenge. When the Prophet warned them of Allah's punishment for their persistence in disbelief and mockery of the truth, they responded with derision, saying: "When will this punishment come if you are truthful?" They sought to hasten it as a form of ridicule, thinking it would never descend upon them.

Allah (Exalted be He) responds to their mockery with a tone of stern rebuke and astonishment: "Do they really seek to hasten Our punishment?" The question implies a warning – that what they ask for in jest is a serious matter. They are playing with fire, demanding something whose arrival they will deeply regret. The verse subtly reminds them that when the punishment does come, it will not be a light matter; rather, it will be a devastating calamity. As the context in the surah continues, Allah describes how the punishment will descend upon them in the morning, and "evil indeed will be that morning for those who were warned."

So take heed, and let your heart soften before the words of your Lord, for the Hereafter is nearer than you think.
