Word Meanings:
- Afabiʿadhābinā (أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا): "Then is it with Our punishment..." – The particle *a* is for interrogation (expressing astonishment and rebuke), *fa* is for connection to what preceded, and *biʿadhābinā* means "with Our punishment."
- Yastaʿjilūn (يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ): "They seek to hasten" – i.e., they ask for it to come quickly, out of mockery and denial, not out of faith or sincerity.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the context of the disbelievers' arrogant challenge. When the Prophet warned them of Allah's punishment for their persistence in disbelief and mockery of the truth, they responded with derision, saying: "When will this punishment come if you are truthful?" They sought to hasten it as a form of ridicule, thinking it would never descend upon them.
Allah (Exalted be He) responds to their mockery with a tone of stern rebuke and astonishment: "Do they really seek to hasten Our punishment?" The question implies a warning – that what they ask for in jest is a serious matter. They are playing with fire, demanding something whose arrival they will deeply regret. The verse subtly reminds them that when the punishment does come, it will not be a light matter; rather, it will be a devastating calamity. As the context in the surah continues, Allah describes how the punishment will descend upon them in the morning, and "evil indeed will be that morning for those who were warned."
This verse serves as a powerful lesson for all times: no one should mock the warnings of Allah or seek to hasten His judgment out of arrogance. The punishment of Allah is real, and when it arrives, no one can repel it. The disbelievers' haste was born of ignorance and pride, but the believer's response is patience, humility, and fear of Allah's might.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound message for every soul. It teaches us that Allah’s timing is perfect, and His wisdom is beyond our comprehension. When you see those who mock the truth and challenge Allah’s promises, do not be shaken in your faith. Their mockery is but a sign of their own blindness. For the believer, this verse is a call to reflect: if the disbelievers were so bold as to ask for punishment, how much more should we, who claim faith, hasten to seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness? Let us not be among those who are heedless, but rather among those who turn to Allah in repentance and humility, fearing His punishment and hoping for His reward. The Qur’an is not a book of empty threats – it is a book of truth, and every promise in it will be fulfilled. So take heed, and let your heart soften before the words of your Lord, for the Hereafter is nearer than you think.
