Word Meanings:

  • وَأَبْصِرْهُمْ (wa-abṣirhum): Look at them, observe them, or wait and see regarding them. It carries the sense of "watch them" or "keep your eyes on them" in anticipation of what will happen.
  • فَسَوْفَ يُبْصِرُونَ (fa-sawfa yubṣirūn): Then they will soon see/realize. This refers to the punishment or consequence that will befall them, which they denied or mocked.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah addresses His Messenger ﷺ with a command that carries both comfort and certainty. After the Prophet had delivered the message of truth and faced stubborn opposition from those who rejected it, Allah instructs him to simply observe them and wait — for the outcome is inevitable. The verse means: "Watch them, O Messenger, and be patient, for they will soon see with their own eyes the very punishment they used to deny and mock."

The command to "look at them" is not a call to seek revenge or to wish harm, but rather a reassurance that Allah's promise is true. The disbelievers, in their arrogance, thought they could escape accountability. They challenged the Prophet and asked when this punishment would come. Allah responds: You do not need to hasten it — just wait and watch. The time will come when they will see with absolute clarity what they once rejected, but at that moment, seeing will be of no benefit to them. Their eyes will open to the truth when it is too late — when the punishment descends upon them in this world or on the Day of Judgment.

This verse also carries a profound lesson for the believers: the victory of truth is guaranteed, and the destruction of falsehood is certain. The Prophet ﷺ did not need to fight for his own honor or to prove himself — Allah Himself would demonstrate the truth in the most decisive manner. The disbelievers would witness the fulfillment of every warning, and their regret would be immense, but regret at that hour is useless.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a living testimony to the power of patience and trust in Allah. When you are upon the truth and face opposition, mockery, or rejection, do not despair. Allah sees your struggle, and He has already decreed the outcome. The same eyes that once looked at the Prophet with arrogance and denial would one day look upon the punishment with terror and regret. This is the sunnah (way) of Allah with those who reject His messengers throughout history.

Let this verse strengthen your heart when you invite others to Islam and face harsh responses. Your duty is only to convey the message with wisdom and beautiful preaching — the result is in Allah's hands. He never fails His promise. So observe, be patient, and trust that the truth will prevail, and falsehood will vanish. As Allah says elsewhere: "And say: Truth has come, and falsehood has vanished. Indeed, falsehood is ever bound to vanish" (Al-Isra 17:81).

May Allah make us among those who see the truth clearly in this life and are saved from the punishment of the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 173-177 — As-Saffat

173وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ الْغَالِبُونَ
And [that] indeed, Our soldiers will be those who overcome.
174فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ
So, [O Muhammad], leave them for a time.
175وَأَبْصِرْهُمْ فَسَوْفَ يُبْصِرُونَ
And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see.
176أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ
Then for Our punishment are they impatient?
177فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمْ فَسَاءَ صَبَاحُ الْمُنذَرِينَ
But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.
