Surah As-Saffat — Verse 180

Word Meanings:

• Subḥāna (سُبْحَانَ): Declaring Allah free from every imperfection, deficiency, or flaw; glorifying Him above all that does not befit His majesty.
• Rabbika (رَبِّكَ): Your Lord, O Muhammad — the One who nurtures, sustains, and governs all creation.
• Rabb al-ʿIzzah (رَبِّ الْعِزَّةِ): The Lord of Might, Honor, and Absolute Power — the Owner and Bestower of all strength and glory.
• ʿAmma yaṣifūn (عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ): From what they describe — i.e., the false attributions and lies that the polytheists and disbelievers ascribe to Him.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse is a declaration of Allah’s absolute transcendence and purity. After the disbelievers had uttered the most heinous slanders against their Creator — claiming that He has partners, spouses, and children, and attributing to Him every kind of deficiency — Allah responds by glorifying Himself, saying: *"Glorified is your Lord, the Lord of Might, above what they describe."*

The meaning is: My Lord is far removed, utterly and completely, from every false claim they make. He is the Owner of all might and power — the One whose strength knows no limit, whose authority none can challenge, and whose glory none can rival. How could such a Being — perfect in His essence, His attributes, and His actions — ever be compared to His creation, or be said to have a partner in His divinity, or a son from His creatures?

The verse carries a profound message of comfort and reassurance to the Prophet ﷺ and to every believer: do not be grieved by the lies of the disbelievers, for their words do not touch the majesty of your Lord in the least. Their descriptions are but the futile attempts of weak creatures who cannot even comprehend the reality of their own existence, let alone the nature of their Creator.

This verse also serves as a timeless lesson for all humanity: that our tongues must be guarded when speaking of Allah. We must never attribute to Him anything that contradicts His perfection, nor describe Him in ways that diminish His glory. Rather, we should constantly purify our belief and our speech, declaring His transcendence with humility and love.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

O reader! Contemplate the greatness of the One who is being described here. He is the Lord of Might — the One whose power created the heavens and the earth, who holds the universe in His grasp, and before whose majesty every king and every tyrant will bow on the Day of Judgment. Yet, despite this infinite greatness, He is also the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate — He sent His messengers to guide us, revealed His books to teach us, and opened the doors of repentance for us.

How beautiful is this religion that teaches us to know our Lord with such clarity! It purifies our minds from superstition, elevates our souls above falsehood, and connects us directly to the Creator of all that exists. When you declare *"Subḥāna Rabbika Rabbil-ʿIzzah ʿammā yaṣifūn"* — you are not merely uttering words; you are aligning your heart with the truth of the universe, affirming that your Lord is perfect, and distancing yourself from every false belief that degrades the human intellect.

Let this verse be a shield for your faith and a light for your heart. Whenever you hear a false claim about Allah, or whenever doubts whisper to you, respond with this glorious declaration: *"Glorified is my Lord, the Lord of Might, above what they describe."* And know that the One you worship is worthy of all praise, all glorification, and all love — now and forever.
