Surah As-Saffat — Verse 22

Word Meanings:

• Ahshurū (احْشُرُوا): Gather, assemble, or muster together — a command to bring people forcibly and collectively.
• Alladhīna ẓalamū (الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا): Those who wronged — referring to the polytheists and disbelievers who wronged themselves and others through shirk (associating partners with Allah) and transgression.
• Wa azwājahum (وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ): Their counterparts or their likes — meaning those who resembled them in disbelief and wickedness, not necessarily their spouses in the worldly sense.
• Wa mā kānū yaʿbudūn (وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ): And what they used to worship — i.e., the false deities, idols, and objects of worship they took besides Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the terrifying realities of the Hereafter unfold, Allah will command His angels with a stern, awe-inspiring order: "Gather together those who wronged themselves through disbelief, polytheism, and sin — along with their likes and counterparts who shared their path of misguidance — and also gather the false gods and idols they used to worship instead of Allah." This includes every idol, stone, tree, or being that was venerated besides the Almighty. The angels will round them all up and drive them forcefully toward Hellfire, making their destination clear and inescapable.

This verse paints a vivid picture of divine justice: the wrongdoers will not face their fate alone — they will be assembled with their companions in evil and even with the very objects of their misplaced devotion, so that all may witness the futility of their worship and the utter failure of their false hopes. The idols that could neither benefit nor harm anyone will be cast into the Fire alongside their worshippers, exposing the absurdity of shirk for all eternity.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder this scene with a heart that seeks truth. How merciful is Allah to warn us now, before that Day arrives! He has sent us the Qur’an and the guidance of His Prophet ﷺ so that we may never be among those gathered in humiliation. This verse is a loving call to purify our faith — to direct our worship, our love, our hope, and our fear to Allah alone, the Creator and Sustainer of all worlds. For He who created you, knows you, and provides for you is the only One worthy of your devotion. Do not wait until the angels are commanded to gather you — rather, hasten now to the mercy of Allah, repent from every sin, and embrace the sweetness of tawḥīd (monotheism). The gates of repentance are open, and Allah’s forgiveness is vaster than all your shortcomings. Let this reminder be the turning point that saves you from that dreadful assembly and leads you to the eternal gardens of delight, where you will dwell among the righteous, far from any fear or grief.
