Word Meanings:

  • "Bal" (بَلْ): Rather/Indeed — used here for correction and rebuttal, shifting the blame back to the followers.
  • "Lam takūnū mu'minīn" (لَّمْ تَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ): You were not believers — meaning you were not people of faith or conviction in the truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the leaders and chiefs of misguidance — those who were followed in disbelief — respond to their followers who had blamed them for leading them astray. The followers had said: "It was you who misled us from the right path." But the leaders reply: "Rather, you yourselves were not believers from the very beginning."

Their words mean: "We did not force you into disbelief, nor did we deceive you while you were firmly upon the truth. The reality is that your hearts were already closed to faith, your minds were already inclined to rejection, and you willingly embraced falsehood. We merely called you to what your own souls desired, and you responded eagerly. The seed of disbelief was already planted within you — we only watered it. You were never truly believers in your hearts; if you had been, no call to falsehood could have shaken your conviction."

This is a profound moment of mutual blame and regret in the Hereafter — each side trying to absolve itself of responsibility, yet both are fully accountable for their choices. The leaders expose the truth: the followers were not innocent victims; they were active participants in their own ruin, for faith is a matter of the heart, and no one can strip it away from a person who truly holds onto it.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every soul. It reminds us that faith is a personal responsibility — no one can force you away from Allah, just as no one can force you towards Him. The excuses we might offer on the Day of Judgment — "I was influenced by others," "My environment made me this way," "I followed my leaders" — will not stand before Allah. He has given you a mind to think, a heart to feel, and a soul that yearns for its Creator.

Do not wait until that Day to realize that you were the one who chose your path. Embrace the light of faith today, while you still have the chance. Let your heart be a believer's heart — firm upon the truth, unshaken by the calls of falsehood. For on that Day, no argument will save you except the sincerity of your own faith and the mercy of your Lord. May Allah make us among those who are true believers in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 27-31 — As-Saffat

And they will approach one another blaming each other.
They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."
The oppressors will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,
And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.
So the word of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment].
