Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fa-ittala'a (فَاطَّلَعَ): He looked down or peered over, gazing from a high vantage point.
- Sawā’ al-Jaḥīm (سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ): The very middle or center of the blazing Fire.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound scene from the Hereafter, we witness a conversation between the inhabitants of Paradise and the inhabitants of Hellfire. The believing man—who was previously in the company of a disbelieving companion in the worldly life—turns to his fellow believers in Paradise and asks them: "Will you look with me to see what has become of my former companion?" When they agree, he peers down from his elevated position in Paradise and sees his old companion right in the very heart of the blazing Fire, surrounded by its flames from every side.
This sight is not one of gloating or mockery, but rather a moment of profound realization and gratitude. The believer recognizes the vast difference between the two destinies—one who followed guidance and one who rejected it—and this contrast fills his heart with thankfulness to Allah for His mercy and guidance.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every soul. The companion who ended up in the depths of Hellfire was once a close friend, someone with whom the believer shared moments and conversations in this world. Yet their paths diverged completely based on their choices regarding faith and obedience to Allah.
Dear reader, pause and reflect: Who are your companions? What influence do they have on your heart and your deeds? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "A person is upon the religion of their close friend, so let each of you look to whom they befriend." This verse reminds us that friendship in this world has consequences in the next. Choose companions who draw you closer to Allah, who remind you of Him when you forget, and who encourage you toward righteousness—so that, by Allah's grace, you may never find yourself looking down from Paradise at a beloved face burning in the Fire. May Allah protect us all and grant us righteous companions in this life and in the Hereafter.
