Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Fā innahum" – "Then indeed they" – refers to the polytheists and disbelievers.
- "Lākilūna minhā" – "will surely eat from it" – from the tree of Zaqqum.
- "Famāli'ūna minhā al-buṭūn" – "and will fill from it their bellies" – to the point of fullness, consuming it excessively due to extreme hunger.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues the vivid description of the punishment awaiting the disbelievers in the Hereafter. After mentioning the tree of Zaqqum that grows from the depths of Hellfire—a tree with fruits so repulsive in appearance that they resemble the heads of devils—Allah now tells us what the sinners will do with it.
Despite its hideous form and bitter taste, the disbelievers will eat from this tree. Why? Because their hunger in Hell will be so intense, so unbearable, that they will consume anything placed before them, no matter how foul. Their bellies, hollow from starvation, will be filled to capacity with this cursed fruit. The verse emphasizes this with the word "fāmali'ūna" – they will fill themselves completely, leaving no room for more, driven by a hunger that knows no satisfaction.
This is a profound lesson for us. In this worldly life, Allah has blessed us with pure, wholesome food and drink. Yet how often do we forget to thank Him for these simple blessings? The disbelievers, who rejected Allah's signs and followed their desires, will face the opposite reality—a food that is not only disgusting but also a source of torment.
The imagery here is meant to awaken our hearts. If we reflect on the contrast between the blessings of this world and the punishments of the next, we realize the urgency of turning to Allah in repentance and gratitude. The Quran repeatedly warns us not to be deceived by temporary pleasures, for the Hereafter is eternal and far more significant.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is not merely a description of a distant future—it is a warning wrapped in mercy. Allah tells us about these punishments so that we may avoid the paths that lead to them. He does not wish to harm us; rather, He wants us to succeed. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that even a single sip of water is a blessing we will be asked about on the Day of Judgment. So let us be among those who use their blessings to obey Allah, not those who use them to disobey Him.
The door of repentance is always open. No matter how far we have strayed, Allah's mercy is greater than our sins. Let this verse be a reminder to return to Him, to seek His forgiveness, and to strive for a place in His eternal Paradise, where the food is delicious beyond imagination and the pleasure is everlasting. May Allah protect us from the Fire and grant us His mercy. Ameen.
