Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shawb (شَوْبًا): A mixture or blend, something mixed together.
- Hamim (حَمِيمٍ): Boiling hot water that has reached the extreme limit of heat, scalding and unbearable.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the disbelievers are forced to eat from the tree of Zaqqum—a tree that grows from the depths of Hell, with fruits as ugly as the heads of devils—they will then be given a drink that is a horrifying mixture. This verse tells us that upon that meal, they will have a drink of *hamim*: boiling water so intensely hot that it burns their faces and scalds their insides. This boiling water will be mixed with the Zaqqum in their stomachs, creating a vile, burning concoction that tears through their bodies.
Imagine the sheer torment: first, they are compelled to eat a food of utter disgust, and then, to quench the burning thirst that follows, they are given water that is itself a source of agony. It is not a relief—it is a punishment compounded upon punishment. The heat of the Zaqqum meets the heat of the boiling water, and together they become a liquid fire that rips through their very being.
This is the fate of those who reject the truth and persist in arrogance. But here lies a profound lesson for us: the choices we make in this world shape our reality in the next. Just as the disbelievers chose to fill their hearts with falsehood and their lives with rebellion, they will be forced to fill their stomachs with filth and boiling water.
Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy, has opened the door of repentance for us. He has sent the Qur'an as a guide, the Prophet ﷺ as a mercy, and Islam as a path to eternal bliss. Every moment we turn back to Him, every sincere prayer, every act of kindness, and every step toward righteousness is a shield against this fire. The same tongue that could have been used to mock the truth can be used to remember Allah. The same stomach that could have been filled with the forbidden can be filled with gratitude and moderation.
Let this verse be a wake-up call—a reminder that Hell is real, its torments are unimaginable, and its inhabitants are those who chose it by their own actions. But Paradise is also real, with rivers of pure water that never boil, gardens of everlasting delight, and the greatest reward: the pleasure of Allah. Choose wisely, for the journey is short, but the destination is eternal. May Allah protect us all from the heat of that fire and grant us the coolness of His mercy in the highest gardens of Jannah. Ameen.
