Surah As-Saffat — Verse 86

Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is saying: "Are you truly seeking falsehood—fabricated deities that have no reality, no power, and no right to be worshipped—instead of Allah, the One True God, the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists?"

The word *ifk* here is not just any lie; it is the most severe form of falsehood—a complete inversion of reality. To worship a stone idol, a star, or any created being is to turn the truth upside down. It is to attribute divinity to that which is utterly undeserving of it. Ibrahim is exposing the absurdity of their actions: they are striving, with all their effort and intention, to worship things that cannot hear, see, benefit, or harm them, while abandoning the worship of the One who created them, provides for them, and will judge them.

The verse is a timeless reminder that our intentions and desires must be directed toward the truth. When a person's desire (*tureedoon*) is fixated on falsehood, their entire life becomes built upon a corrupt foundation. Ibrahim's question is a wake-up call—a call to examine what we truly "desire" in our hearts. Do we desire the pleasure of Allah, or do we chase after fleeting, false distractions?

Just as Ibrahim (peace be upon him) stood firm against the tide of ignorance, we too are called to stand firm in our faith. Let us ask ourselves: What are the "gods" of our modern age? Is it wealth, status, fame, or unchecked desires? Anything that takes precedence over the love and obedience of Allah in our hearts is a form of *ifk*—a false god.

The beauty of Islam is that it calls us back to the natural state (*fitrah*)—the innate recognition that there is only One worthy of worship. When you turn to Allah with a sincere heart, you are following the legacy of Ibrahim, the friend of Allah (Khalilullah). He did not just reject falsehood; he actively sought the truth with a sound heart, and Allah honored him with prophethood and leadership of humanity.

Let this verse inspire you to break free from every false attachment and to desire only what pleases your Lord. Your heart was created to worship Allah alone, and in that worship lies true peace, dignity, and success in this life and the Hereafter. Do not waste your precious energy on *ifk*—on falsehood that will vanish like dust. Instead, invest your desires in the eternal truth, and you will find a treasure that never fades.
