Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Bunyānan (بُنْيَانًا): A structure or edifice built for a specific purpose.
  • Al-Jaḥīm (الْجَحِيم): The blazing, intensely hot fire; here it refers to a massive pyre they prepared.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) shattered their idols and left the largest one intact so they could question it, they were left utterly defeated in argument. Their minds could not refute his logic, and their tongues were silenced. So, as is the way of the arrogant and stubborn, they abandoned reason and resorted to brute force. They gathered together and conspired, saying to one another: "Build for him a structure—a massive furnace or a walled enclosure—fill it with firewood, and ignite it until it becomes a raging inferno. Then cast him into it." They sought to punish him with the most painful and humiliating death they could devise, hoping to extinguish the light of truth he carried.

This verse captures a timeless lesson: when falsehood cannot win through debate, it turns to oppression and violence. Yet, as the Qur'an narrates later, Allah made the fire cool and safe for Ibrahim, turning their scheme into a spectacle of divine power. The fire that was meant to burn him became a testament to Allah's protection of His sincere servants.

Dear reader, reflect on the courage of Ibrahim—he stood alone against a whole society, armed only with faith and certainty in Allah. He did not fear their threats, for his heart was connected to the One who controls all things. This story invites you to trust Allah in every trial, no matter how overwhelming the "fire" of your circumstances may seem. When you are sincere in your faith, Allah can transform the very flames of hardship into peace and safety. Let this be a source of hope and strength: no matter how great the conspiracy against truth, Allah's promise to aid His righteous servants is certain. And remember, the ultimate victory belongs to those who place their complete reliance on their Lord, for He is the Best of Protectors and the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
