Key Words and Phrases:

  • In kullun illā (إِن كُلٌّ إِلَّا): "Not one of them but" — an emphatic construction meaning "every single one of them, without exception."
  • Kadhdhaba (كَذَّبَ): "Denied" or "rejected as false" — here, it refers to the act of rejecting the messengers sent by Allah.
  • Ar-Rusul (الرُّسُل): "The messengers" — plural of *rasūl*, meaning the prophets sent by Allah to guide humanity.
  • Fa ḥaqqa (فَحَقَّ): "So it became due/obligatory" — meaning the punishment became a certain, inevitable reality.
  • ʿIqāb (عِقَاب): "Punishment" or "retribution" — the divine consequence for persistent denial and transgression.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse delivers a profound and sobering truth: every single one of the disbelieving factions mentioned in the preceding verses — the people of Noah, ʿĀd, Pharaoh, Thamūd, the people of Lot, and the dwellers of the thicket (the people of Shuʿayb) — all of them, without a single exception, rejected the messengers sent to them. And here lies a crucial spiritual insight: when a people denied their own messenger, it was as if they had denied all the messengers, because the message of all prophets is one and the same — the call to worship Allah alone and to submit to His will. The core truth they brought was unified, so rejecting one was rejecting all.

Because of this collective and stubborn denial, the punishment of Allah became an inescapable certainty for them. It was not merely a threat or a possibility — it was a decree that had to be fulfilled. Their fate stands as an eternal lesson: the divine justice of Allah is absolute, and no power, no wealth, no military might, and no alliance of disbelieving factions can ever stand against it. Pharaoh had his immense strength, ʿĀd had their towering structures and physical prowess, and Thamūd had their carved mountains — yet none of these availed them in the least when the command of Allah arrived.

The verse also carries a gentle but firm reminder for us today: the pattern of history does not change. Those who persist in rejecting the truth, despite clear signs and repeated warnings, ultimately bring ruin upon themselves. But for those who open their hearts to faith, there is a different promise — one of mercy, forgiveness, and eternal success.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. These nations were not destroyed because they were weak or ignorant — many of them were advanced, powerful, and prosperous. They were destroyed because they allowed arrogance and stubbornness to blind them from the truth. Their end is not a story of the past alone; it is a living sign for every generation. Allah does not change His way — whoever rejects the messengers of truth, in any era, walks the same path toward the same consequence.

Yet the door of mercy remains wide open for you. You are not among those who have already sealed their fate. You have the precious opportunity to learn from their mistakes, to submit to the One who created you, and to follow the final messenger, Muhammad ﷺ, who brought the same message of monotheism and righteousness. The Qur’an is not a book of ancient tales — it is a guide for your life, a light for your heart, and a mercy for all who embrace it. Do not let the arrogance of this world, its distractions, or its fleeting pleasures turn you away from the truth that leads to eternal bliss.

Choose the path of the believers — the path of peace, purpose, and ultimate success — before the decree becomes due. For Allah, the Most Merciful, accepts the repentance of those who turn to Him sincerely, and His forgiveness encompasses all things.
