Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qitṭanā (قِطَّنَا): Our share, portion, or lot — meaning the punishment that has been decreed for them.
- ʿAj-jil (عَجِّل): Hasten, bring quickly.
- Yawm al-Ḥisāb (يَوْمِ الْحِسَاب): The Day of Reckoning — the Day of Judgment.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah informs us of the arrogant and mocking words of the disbelievers who, out of sheer ignorance and stubborn defiance of the truth, said: *"Our Lord, hasten for us our share [of punishment] before the Day of Reckoning."* They were not asking for good or mercy — rather, they were sarcastically demanding that the punishment they had been warned about be brought upon them immediately in this worldly life, rather than waiting for the Hereafter. This was a taunt and a challenge, born from their disbelief and their refusal to take the warnings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) seriously. They thought they could mock the divine promise, not realizing the severity of what they were calling for.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
How strange is the state of those who rush toward their own destruction! Instead of seeking Allah's mercy and forgiveness, they brazenly ask for His wrath. This verse serves as a profound lesson for every believer: never take Allah's warnings lightly, and never mock His promises. The Qur'an repeatedly calls us to hasten toward good deeds, repentance, and obedience — not toward punishment. Let us be among those who say, *"Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire"* (Al-Baqarah: 201). For the Day of Reckoning is certain, and on that day, every soul will find exactly what it has earned — so let us race toward what pleases Allah before that inevitable meeting, and never be among those who foolishly ask for their own ruin. Indeed, Allah is patient, but when His decree comes, no one can avert it. So turn to Him now, with sincere repentance, before the time arrives when no plea will be accepted.
